looking at the freqs on an analyzer is one thing.... it shows you the freqs of course, but to match the tone is a totally different animal.
If you have the same gear that the guitarist in question was using, that's also only one part of the equation. The guitarist's touch, styling, techniques, strings, picks, play just as important a part in the tone they were able to achieve as the gear.
I have listened to many guitarists through the years and have tried to imitate their sound. I can tell you it's possible to get close, but in the end, what you really want to do is get your own sound going.
Story: A player that I knew used a middle quality guitar and a Peavey amp that really ... the two of them together sounded OK but nothing to brag about. this guy played like that all the time and was trying to make it sound better...all to no avail. He tried tone pedals and all sorts of things. Nothing worked.
So one night, his band was playing at a certain local club that had concrete floor, high ceilings and cinderblock walls..... a real nighmare for bands. Anyway, a few of us guitarists from other bands had nothign to do so we went to visit them on their gig. Another guitarist who was known for really nice tone (he had a boogie and a LP) was asked to set in on a few songs on Bobby's guitar/amp. Bobby sat it out with us at the table. When this guitarist started to play, the tone was so much better. The only difference was the person on the guitar. Bobby's comment: Man... how does he do that?
the player is just as much a part of the tone as the gear.
