What was your setup say 7 years ago?
2003 - I had my D8B (still have it), my RME DIGI 9652 (just replaced it) and I think that was when I switched back from Cubase to Sonar after a couple of horrible years. I think I was using a 2.8 GHz Dell with 2 GB RDRAM (fast at the time) and maybe 2 250 G drives? Something like that. I was using two monitors and had KRK V8s. I had a UAD1 (or maybe 2 UAD1s) and all the plug ins that UAD had released to that point - which admittedly was not many. I had a version of waves plugins, but they crippled my PC. I was using real hard synths (still own most of them). I recorded guitars using a microphone and an amp. Interestingly the D8B is still there, I still own most of the hard synths but do not use them as much and occasionally I still like to mic up an amp. I sometimes miss all my outboard stuff. I swear my Alesis DMP Pro sounded better than any VST drum thing I have ever owned, and I have owned a bunch of them. You?
Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!

2003. Using MC 2003 in an HP with 128 MB RAM at 1.1 Ghz. I think I bought my Sound Blaster Extigy that year, but before that, I was using my TASCAM Portastudio as my mixer for mic (SM 58) and guitars into the RealTek. I had yet to discover soft synths, so all my MIDI was played through my Yamaha PRS-GX76.

7 years ago I think I would have recently upgraded from my Sony 4-track MiniDisc recorder to a Korg D1600 (opened up a whole new world for me at the time!!). I was using an Alesis drum machine, only had an EV dynamic handheld mic (w/ no preamp), an ART rack-mount distortion unit, an Alesis Midiverb III and my monitors were some basic desktop computer monitors.

In 2002 I got my first PC. An IBM pent 100. All I knew about PC's reading the assembly instructions and the power button. I had quit playing guitar in '85. By 2004 the PC had given me ambition to start playing again and maybe record something. In 2007 I finally had all the pieces to start with everything posted at Mix. And every song recorded is posted...didn't waste anything that was "finished". I can still find the power button. Only now nothing works. Progress.

I need to maybe possibly retire my 9652 due to lack of 64 bit support and abandonment of the card.. I have a real problem buying another RME at this point. 2003? I can't remember that far back:) I think there was an Emax in there somewhere. A couple of Mackie mixers, same roland controller I use still. JV1080 which i still have and am leaning towards using as my go to synth again (it's just EASY). That's about the time I got the Panasonic DA7 that I still use. They dropped support on that about a week after I bought it. figures. I was still on Pro audio 9 (Cakewalk's best I think). Thanks Tim

I used the fostex DMT-8VL ( 24 bits and 8 tracks) with a boss dr rythm 660 drum machine- and cheap keyboard and various guitars from `1997 until Febuary of 2005 when I discovered Sonar 4 PE - and have been upgrading and spending $$$ ever since - Paid $1200 for it in 1997 -- sold it on ebay in 2005 for $250 January 16, 1997 -- With twice the number of tracks, no compression and a lower price, the new Fostex DMT-8VL provides the MI industry with a clearly superior-and upgradeable hard disk digital multitrack recording and editing system. At a time when the MI industry is demanding new levels of higher performance value, Fostex Corporation of America today announced the introduction of the Fostex DMT-8VL, a revolutionary technological achievement that combines the best of proven, professional hard disk technology with a price that literally redefines what a cost-effective small eight-track digital recording and editing system can do.

space_cowboy You? I was me. I had 7 computers all PIII/1GB based. I had SONAR but was still tied to my (3) ADATs and the Alesis X2 console for audio. Sold them all in Feb. 2003. I had not made any real music for nearly 3 years at that time. In was also 30 days away from separating from my 3rd wife (now divorced) and 2.37572575 years away from meeting the Lovely Lady in my life now (5 years on April 25th).

I don't think I had real studio monitors. The main thing is I've been pretty much behind in "latest thing" so my setup back then was probably 7 years behind 7 years ago.

Yamaha PSR-9000 v.2 (still using it), a mic and a Marantz cd recorder connected to a Marantz cd player. Did most of the instrument tracks onboard the Yamaha (16tracks max) then recorded that to cd. Played the CD back and recorded any other bits and vocals live over the cd track both routed into the cd recorder. Real bummer when you screwed up somewhere (most of the time for me!) or got it right but the levels were wrong - had to start over every time. Even worse when the mistake was right near the end. By the time anything was ever "finished" I was usually sick to death of hearing it and couldn't listen to it for a while! Finally discovered Sonar in 2006 whilst I was looking for a new keyboard and couldn't decide between Roland Fantom and Yamaha Motif. Once I realised that I could get Sonar and all the equipment I needed to get going for less than the keyboard it was a no-brainer for me.

Various guitars & percussion instruments. We recorded directly into the Fostex's, (meaning we had to get it right, every time - no edititng capability at all) Then, due to trrack limitation, had to bounce say the drums down to a stereo pair before continuing, mixing with limited FX & processors on the Spirit desks. The only outboard items above currently in my rack are the Valve EQ, thr Vitalizer (not yet used on a song), the DBX & the Voicemaster.

The FF800s are truly awesome. 2 ADAT lightpipes (16 IO), 8 rear analog 1/4" IO, 4 mic pres on the front. SPDIF... They are serious. I got two because my D8B needs 3 pairs of lightpipe.
