What's next.

Hey guys, let's keep this 1% more serious than regular CH posts. I'm really opening my ears for some advice.

I've been steady with my equipment at the moment. I've done my best, and i'm happy with my material. Happy with my mixes and masters. But now i can feel that my equipment is holding me down on better quality. What i have is a Motu Ultralite-mk3, M-Audio Nova Capsule, PCs okay, Samson R8a Monitors.

Whenever i get to compare my work and others work. I get this assumption.

"I'm proud of my mix, it seems as good as the commercial track's mix. But the commercial track is still clearer and high fidelity."

There is some weird stuff i can't explain, but maybe you would understand what i am saying, even if i'm explaining it so badly.

Question is, what's next in priority? Converter or pre-amp? Or what?

I'm really confident that it isn't my mix or masters. It's more about clarity and quality, it's like a gut-feel that i get. Don't get me as arrogant though. Thank you guys. :)

    Hi Miggy,

    To be honest, any one of us is going to struggle to match commercial mixes with home studio equipment. Having said that, are you sure that the clarity and  high fidelity you're hearing isn't just loudness? Do you import a reference track into your projects to check while you're mixing? I find it really helps to get somewhere in the ballpark.

    @James

    Well, i don't expect to go exaclty there just yet, but atleast i want to come closer slowly as i progress in my career. Yes, it's not volume.

    So i was thinking of improving my things. I don't know where to start. So i asked what would be better, converters or pre-amps? I was also thinking about higher quality outboard reverbs or compressors. I just don't know where to start or what to prioritize in!

    Even the best converter, etc can't overcome bad acoustics in a room.  Have you treated yours?  It could be cheaper than buying a lot of new equipment.

    Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

    I would start at the beginning.  First the room, as mentioned above, then examine your mics (are they top quality and appropriate for whatever you're recording?), then look at your signal path including mic-pres, cables, patchbays, mixers, etc.  Then look at your sound interface.

    The goal is to record a better starting point.

    Once you're recording the best source material that you can, then you can work on what you use to manipulate that.
