What's the Right Way to Create Drum Loops in GTP4?

Hi folks -
It's been a few years since I visited this forum.  However, I've recently decided to try and get back into recording, and I upgraded to GTP4 (from GTP3 and GTP2).   So far, I really like the improvements - especially the ability to add midi tracks.  However, I am finding it difficult to understand the best way to create my own drum tracks now.   In GTP2 and GTP3, I used Fruityloops Express to create the sequences, then I exported them to acidized wav files that I could import into GTP.   I'm thinking that creating them as midi tracks is probably a better way to go in GTP4.

When I create a new project using the 'normal' template, it automatically creates an 'SI-Drum Kit' track.  I can then paste midi loops to the track if I want, but if I want to create my own pattern, it looks like I have to use the PRV.   Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to get to the view where it lists the samples (ie: kick drum, high hat, snare, etc.) rather than the piano keys in the PRV.  I'm thinking it may have something to do with drum maps.  Unfortunately, I can't select a drum map from the output dropdown for the track like the manual says.  It's just not a listed option.

However, from reading this thread ->  http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=1840050 , I figured out how to create a track from scratch that does what I want.  It actually makes more sense this way because it creates two tracks - a midi track that outputs to the SI-Drum Kit, and an audio track that outputs the SI-Drum Kit to my sound card.   If I edit the output dropdown of the midi track, I can then select a new drum map.  If I then pick the Studio Instruments Drum Kit drum map, then the PRV shows the actual sample names and drum hits.

WHY IS THIS SO CONVOLUTED?  What is the difference between the 'SI-Drum Kit' track created by the template, and the method I just described?   What is the RIGHT way to do this?   I'd rather not use two tracks to do one thing if I don't have to.   At the same time, I'd rather not use the standard PRV and have to try and remember which key represents which drum sample.

Can someone point me to a tutorial, or explain how this is all supposed to work?   Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike

So has nobody really tried to create drum loops from scratch with GTP4?

    G'Day Mike,

Try right clicking on the virtual keyboard in the PRV - this brings up the "Note Name Dialog". Might help you identify your drums.

Unfortunately, I tried that.   All it did was replace the keyboard keys with numbers.   Any other ideas?

    Thanks for the help though...

Not on mine - came up with a choice of midi devices - selected one and the names came up.
