What's the most appropriate app to open .PDF files?

[rant]
Windows 10 seems to think it's their new, half-baked, Edge browser evidently.  I keep setting it to Adobe Acrobat Reader and it keeps resetting it back to Edge after a little while...

I think it's time to figure out how to uninstall Edge again.

I often get the message that something was wrong and a file association was reset.  This ALWAYS means that a file association I've set to an application I really want to use (say Faststone Maxview for images) gets reset to the program Windows 10 came with (in this case Photo Viewer).  Same thing with music, I want Media Monkey, it resets to it's horrible Groove Music program.

I finally did a search and uninstalled most of these new apps that came with Windows 10 (and found I certainly was NOT alone with this issue).  Tonight I disabled Edge - holy crap what a PITA that was!

MS has integrated Edge into Win10 and wants it to replace IE.

If you're using wifi, set the connection to metered so windows doesn't make automatic changes or updates. Then set Adobe Reader as default for pdfs. Edge insists on being the default for URL:microsoft-edge and URL:read. I have not been able to disable it and doing so may cause other issues. All other file types go to IE or Chrome and Adobe Reader. Been working without a hitch so far.

I ditched Acrobat a long time ago.  I've had the free version of PDF-XChange Editor for a few months.  Waaaaay better to me.

Anyway, there is a setting somewhere that determines whether PDF links get opened in the browser or not.

Go to Settings > Default Apps > Set defaults by app

Select Adobe Reader (or whatever) > Choose defaults...  and select all file types there

Select Microsoft Edge > Choose defaults...  and deselect everything there

Actually, there was a Chrome update last week which changed that exact setting so I had to fix a few client computers.  It's under the Advanced Settings, in the Content area at the bottom where it says "Open PDF's in the default viewer."  Counter-intuitively, if you check this box, it will try to save the PDF file to disk instead of opening it in Chrome's PDF viewer.

Acrobat X and XI no longer work correctly, so I always install Adobe Acrobat Reader DC on client computers (https://get.adobe.com/reader).

It happens to me too Craig - every few weeks or so.

I reset the default program to Adobe Reader each time but it doesn't seem to stick.

I've had to reset the pdf file association a few times, too.

Windows has become rather intrusive and arrogant, IMO. It really wants me to use Edge. It really wants me to use the immortal Cortana. I finally gave in and let Edge be my pdf reader. Resistance is futile.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

in any case , + 1 on the This ^^^.

I'm not a fan of Win 10 to be honest ...it works well for music .That I will give it . My RUB is  Win 10  is way too pushy and aggressive for me to like it as an OS ...
It's just like having somebody's mother in law moving in on me full time while bossing me around from High Noon until Midnight .... nagging me to death telling me what I can and can not do on my own computer ..

I'm not the fastest gun in the West over here . When I want to open up a PDF I just right click it and choose the program I want to open it

all the best,

I'm slowly getting to agreeable terms with my new Win10 Pro DAW.  I have all of the cute apps disabled - took forever to make Groove go away for good.

I have had 2 cases though where I sat down to do something quick, but Windows had my entire network consumed doing downloads.  This is with Defer selected.  It's worse with my Win10 Home laptop.

The initial setup on both totally crippled my 3.5Mb downlink for nearly 2 days each getting caught up.

This is my last major gripe about 10 - it's otherwise a better performer than 8.1, which was better than the XP box I had before that.

If M$ doesn't relax on this download what/when/where it wants approach, I'll end up having to disable the NIC during times I don't want to be interrupted.

I did find this Craig, it looks a little technical for me but you know your way round a PC

  1. Tap on the Windows-key, type regedit.exe and hit the Enter-key. This opens the Windows Registry Editor. If you can, open a second Registry window for easier handling of the following operations.
  2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModel\Repository\Packages
  3. Locate the application you want to block from being the default, and open App\Capabilities\FileAssociations there. This displays the list of file associations of that particular application.
  4. Take note of the value in Data, it looks like a long random string: AppXsq3757nydv3f9bx6862hv0t4z7ennqqd
  5. Please note that this string may be different for any of the file types or protocols listed there.
  6. Switch to the second Registry Editor window, and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\ThatRandomString, e.g. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\AppXsq3757nydv3f9bx6862hv0t4z7ennqqd
  7. Right-click on it, and select New > String Value.
  8. Name it NoOpenWith, and keep its value empty.

Yeah, I went into the registry and removed several of the programs (Photo Viewer and Groove Music for example), but Edge had to be handled differently.  I changed ownership on the system files for Edge, then changed the security on those files, then changed them to read-only and finally renamed the two executables as *.old.  *Phew!*  WAY too much work, but it's done!

(Don't get me started on when Windows 10 updates during the middle of the night without warning while I've got some heavy processing going on and I wake up to a lot of corruption to deal with!!!  )

With Metered Connection in wifi there IS no windows update (including Edge) unless I say there is. And I've had no issues with anything lately... not like I did before metering.

No need to disable Edge. I simply don't use it and have "undefaulted" it from everything as stated above. As much as I hate IE, it's the only browser that works most everything the way I like so I use it.

Defender has been doing a pretty good job so far, so I won't be renewing Norton either.

I don't get the trend of these dumbed down browsers or maybe it's me that's dumb because I still like the menus on Firefox and IE.

For a complete "dumbed down" experience try a Google Chrome Book.  Most if not all don't even have a delete button.

Yes, I did the same thing , setting my 2 Win 10 laptops to a metered connection ...
The last time they tried to shove an update down my throat was in July of last year
Defender seems pretty good ... I do updates for that manually at the time of my choosing  ..

ESET has definitely been a notch above all of the other A/V's I've had to deal with.  I've had to clean up issues for clients using AVG, AVAST, Norton, Symantec and the Micro$oft stuff, but not one issue with ESET (which is why it's the one I use on my computers and laptops for the last several years - and I go ALL over the place!).

Hi Craig

I just noticed the app default change for PDF files from Adobe Acrobat Reader to Microsoft Edge - it happened when I was unzipping a program update I'd downloaded.

As WinZip extracted each part of the zip file, I was getting onscreen messages about apps being reset. I didn't take much notice to be honest, but I did see each warnings being added to the Windows notifications area on the taskbar.

Once the program was unzipped and installed into Photoshop, I checked out the warnings again.

As you can see specifically, the PDF file association was reset to Edge (from Adobe) in the process:

I don't know if this is what's been happening every time these default apps have been changed mate, but I've never seen a warning pop up like that before.

Seeing as I was using WinZip at the time, I've just tried resetting the default back to Adobe and then running Winzip again. This time I got no warnings, but crucially the PDF icons on my desktop changed back to Edge.

Further to this I've tried zipping and unzipping with WinZip on quite a few files, and every time the reset back to Edge occurs.

It would be interesting to see if you get the same results mate, and that we may have identified when this reset occurs, if not why it happens.

Incidentally, using ZipGenius to zip/unzip does not cause the problem.

Say what you may ,
I Wub my writtle "dumbed down" Chrome book ...IMHO , this little guy is worth it's weight in gold ...
It's Amazingly  fast . Never had any u tube or other video buffing problems  like I get on my traditional computers
It runs my 2i4 perfectly w out drivers , same for my other Yamaha S card ...no drivers needed .
It is much easier for me to go on to Groove 3 on the CB and follow along using my DAW than it is to have to keep stopping the vid while try to reproduce the video lesson ...
