What's with people who wear thick warm clothing on hot humid days?
I guess the short answer is that they're crazy. And I guess I do see a lot of crazy looking homeless types wearing thick fur-lined jackets on sweltering days. Fascinating how being crazy could make you so immune to your own body temperature though. But it's not just the street crazies. Sometimes it'll be a godawfully hot and humid day here in Manhattan, in the region of 90F with 65-70% humidity, and I'll see some girl walk by wearing a thermal fleece done all the way up to the neck. What's up with that? I remember one time going down into the subway and it must have been a crazy humid 115 degrees down there, and there's this Scandinavian looking tourist on the platform wearing a thick oilskin coat fastened to the top. There had been a little light rain about an hour ago, but it had since cleared up and yet there she was, in the kind of humid heat that makes the sweat roll down your back constantly and makes you want to tear all of your clothes off, in the kind of jacket you'd wear in a winter storm on a North Sea fishing boat. The fact that she hadn't even unfastened it a little was what really got me. Some people are just plain freaks. Or is it a circulation problem or something?

New York City summer screwed my sense of fashion and my wardrobe. Las Vegas finished what was left of it. Haven't worn a tie in over 2 years. :( But my first summer in NY, I could have been one of those folks. :P

By the end of the summer here I am so ready to start wearing sweaters and jackets and shoes again. And to be able to wear a single set of clothes during the course of the day without having to change.

Homeless people do it because they don't have any place to store it for the summer and if they just leave it somewhere, another homeless person will take it, then they won't have it to wear when it gets cold. homeless tend to carry everything with them that they care about.

[/quote maybe he is emulating medieval times? That's why weddings were held in June then, since you only took a bath once a year . I guess you didnt want to offend your mate with BO during the consumation

Remember Billie Crystal's great tagline from SNL - "it's much better to look good than to feel good"? I've even seen this irrational fashion in the Philippines, where hip kids wear stocking caps pulled down over their ears as if they were walking to school in Minnesota in January. I shudder to think what that headwear smells like at the end of the day.

I see skater kids wearing wooly hats on 100 degree days here. When teenagers do it I think there's a bit of "look at me, I can handle anything" bravado about it. I see a similar thing in frat boys walking to the store in shorts and flip flops in sub zero temperatures. I myself do that, but I'm a Geordie and we really can handle it.

Somewhere, in an overly festive kitchen, Mr. Tickles licked his lips and purred softly. With a flick of the mouse, he scrolled down to scan the freds in the Coffeehouse. He licked his white left forepaw and brushed his silky hair as he read. His gaze shifted to the floor, staring blankly at the prone body of his previous servant. Mr. Tickles would solve this "People" problem once and for all, even if he had to do it one by one.

People have been dressing inappropriately in the name of fashion probably since clothing was invented. You would think flannel shirts would be illegal in LA or at least buttoning them all the way up but 2 million Vatos can't be wrong!

OH, I've seen kids in hoodies around here the last few years. It is hot and really humid here in the summer and yeah, they wear the hoodies because it is their style. I know what you mean now.. I forget what they call themselves.. it seems not to be as much as a couple of years ago. IMO, form follows function follows comfort...

I guess there are tons of reasons why somone would do it...most of them not good ones. I know people with poor blood circulation who are always cold...one summer while on vacation we stayed with an uncle who had very bad circulation in his legs. They had the heat set to 90F and we were in Florida in the summer....I couldn't wait to get out of there. Another reason might be that if you're carrying valuables around in bad parts of the city , then a jacket makes a great way to hide it all, and it could be a kind of deterrent...no one knows what you might be packing in that jacket and do we really want to find out? If you get shot or stuck with a knife a jacket packed right could make you much safer....I can't disclose what I have in my jacket :)

Tim has a good idea some suffer with medical conditions were regulating ones furry body temperature can be a real pain in the ass.

I'm from NYC …specially Manhattan and I lived there for 2 thirds of my life before I moved out West …. on real hot humid days I still wore long sleeves and jackets because I didn't want your sweaty A$$ rubbing up against me while I'm ridding the train during rush hour then I solved that problem real quick by riding a motorcycle everywhere ….
