What's your favorite tuner?
I use a Boss TU-12, some of the newer clip on types, and I like the one in Guitar Rig. I sed to have a Korg pocket sized... it lasted 20 years. The Boss TU-12 seems real easy to use... guests like it. I'm probably ambivalent about it. What's you're favorite tuner? I'd like a fresh small portable hardware tuner. I'd consider a cool software version as well. especially if it ran both free standing and as a plug in. What do you like the best? Thanks! best regards, mike

I have an old Korg Tuner model WT 12. I did some research and it came out in 1979. I think I have had mine since then too. It does require you to select each note you are tuning one by one but I have not seen a tuner that is so stable in terms of how it reads when you are tuning instruments. It is just very stable and the needle does not move around at all. Just slow and smooth and it is accurate too. It has got a mode where it generates tones which can be handy for choirs etc.. You do have to be in the right octave as well. If you are not it wont pick up the note that well. But it is a good old work horse. It has the ability to reject notes you are not interested in obviously as you have to actually select the note you want to tune. There must be some great modern equivalents. The batteries last forever too in the Korg. I have tunes a few synthesisers in my day too. Thank god we don't have to tune old hardware synths now!

Yes this is how my wife tunes her violin and viola. She bangs one of those things on the table and tunes her instrument to the sound it is making.

One pitch for one string and then my ears. The tuner in Guitar Rig 4 for me to get usually a D note and that's it. I take it from there. When I change strings Mike I don't use a tuner. I try to get it in with no reference and then check to see how close I got. Most of the time I'm 5-10 cents flat. Very seldom sharp. Years ago I use to use the phone's dial tone.

For hardware, I like the Boss TU-2. As a tuner it's perfectly functional. I'm pretty lead-footed on my pedals, and it's quite rugged. Also, the power-supply feature to feed the rest of my FX board is great, and it makes a handy foot-controlled Mute for those live moments when you quickly want silence. Like KenB, I think it's good to tune in silence. Nothing says 'amateur' more than hearing a guitarist loudly retuning between songs... For software, I like G-Tune. It's simple, light, and free.

I'm currently using the Peterson iStrobe App on my iPhone 3GS and so far I'm happy with it. It lacks some of the bells and whistles of the PC based Strobosoft or Stroboflip but it's good enough for rock 'n' roll, country, pop etc. Think it was $8.00. Well worth the punt and it saved me the anxiety of awaiting a never-coming delivery at this time of year with the snow here etc. I use it in conjunction with the Peterson 1/4" input adapter. I also have a mini mic which plugs in which I use for acoustic guitars. Both plug into the phone's headphone input. If I decide that it's crap over the coming months, I'll let you know. Stewart

I use the tuner in GR4 mostly and it seems pretty accurate to me, though it doesn't work as smoothly as the tuner in GR3 did IMO. On the rare occasion I'm not going direct, I use the tuner in my Boss GT6. Dan

mike_mccue So does anyone have opinions about accuracy? Does anyone with a good ear (hey don't ask me... I use a tuner) think their tuner is off in any way? Thanks, mike The most accurate tuner I've ever used is my Peterson StroboStomp. It's the one I go to when recording or setting intonation, but it's not small and you have to plug in a microphone for acoustic instruments. Other times I use one of those little clip-on tuners because it's way more convenient, but it's nowhere near as accurate. I don't claim to have the greatest ear in the world, but notes can be quite a bit sharp or flat and still show as "in tune" by the display. I don't gig any more, but if I did I'd definitely take the StroboStomp.
A few of my songs SONAR Platinum, Cakewalk by BandLab, Windows 10, Focusrite Scarlett 6i6.

I have perfect pitch - I don't need a tuner. Far from it!! Live I use the Boss TU-12, too. I'm pretty happy with it. On bass though it sometimes takes longer than I'd like to recognize what string I'm playing. I've borrowed a Peterson stroboflip that I've used when I forgot mine and it's pretty sweet. I would say it's the most accurate I've used. In the studio, I use the tuner in my Line6 PodFarm

I used Cakewalk tuner and then guitar rig tuner. But after doing that, I always verify the sound with my Yamaha synthesizer using my ears . I haven't found a tuner that's easy to use yet very accurate.

I really thought some one was going to advocate for a top of the line Peterson strobe unit. I guess everyone is satisfied. I'm just wondering what the options are and if the fancier ones do provide more accuracy. I'm generally happy with my tuning but was doing an intonation adjustment on a bass guitar a few days ago and started thinking about it again. best regards, mike

Remember also that there's no such thing as being "perfectly in tune" due to the inherent inaccuracies of the equal tempered system.

One of the features of the Peterson line is that it has many sweetened temperaments. I don't know when I use any of it... but I do enjoy making intonation adjustments with guitars and such... and it seems like any more accuracy you have their is good thing. I really did think I may be on the low end of connoisseurship with regards to tuners... but it seems we all are getting along with small appliances or our ears. Thanks. best regards, mike

I usually tune my guitar by ear. As a kid I always had a 440 fork which the band would tune to. I picked up a fender guitar tuner for $5.00 and I'll use that occasionally to tune my Washburn acoustic. I really need to have the intonation adjusted on it. I have a pocket Korg chromatic tuner I use to help me tune the piano. I use it to set the temperament, and then it serves as a second ear while I'm voicing the whole thing.

mike_mccue So does anyone have opinions about accuracy? Does anyone with a good ear (hey don't ask me... I use a tuner) think their tuner is off in any way? Thanks, mike Yes tuners can be off. Years back when I gigged and used a tuner it was a Korg that had adjustments for each note. I could dial in the tuner. ( I still have it-probably a collectors item it's so old, lol) There's not only accuracy issues, there is also application. They surely have their place on stage. You didn't mention wether or not you'd be using this at the DAW or the stage. It's my opinion that if you're not on stage you don't need it. I'll add support to my opinion with a question; How would you tune a piano? I'm assuming guitar is your main instrument Mike and I suggest getting your ears working should you ever want to be able to "set-up" a guitar. Again, it's just my opinion. Get an A-440 tuning fork unless you're needs are for stage. I can't help with that...been to many years since I was there.
