What's your project load time in Sonar X2?

Hi all. I'm running Sonar X2a and my OS off a Crucial M4 SSD, and to load VSt's and get into Sonar it is lightening quick, but i'm puzzled as to why it seems to then be taking quite long to load an actual project. I've tried opening a blank project to test speed times, and also one with only about 5 tracks of drums on, and the average time it's taking to load the latter one is 22 seconds. For a project that's only 1.09MB in size, am i right in thinking this is a bit too long from a SSD?? I have 12GB of RAM by the way and my setup is new- only had my pc and everything else for about three weeks. Any feedback appreciated.

Are your CWP files (project files) stored on the SSD or the normal hard drive?  Check your Preferences to confirm.

    Cheers!

Hi- Yes the CWP files are also on the SSD. Is 22 seconds slow in your opinion? Just wanted to add- as my set up is new, this is only the second project on my computer, which is why i thought it even odder it should be loading in that time.

You should keep your "working project folders" on the C drive with cake.

Move them to a storage drive when they are finished and accessing them is not as critical.

Loading Sonar to start with should only take a few seconds and same deal with projects. I don't pay too much attention to the actual load times of either the program or the projects.

My main concern is that they do load and that the system is stable. Whether it's 10 seconds or 30, it's still faster than tape for loading a project and getting ready to work.  I'm generally doing something else during the loading anyway... grabbing project lyrics or setting up the guitar, so the actual time to load is inconsequential.

I as well am experiencing very long project load times..... Even a one-track tune with a VST soft-synth track takes forever to load up.....
Alas, yes, better than "the old days".... ha ha ha ha ha......

Does that VSTi load samples into RAM?
If so, that's part of the load time.

Nope, it wasn't a "sample" VST...

The Stuff: Sonar X2a Producer 64 AND 32-bit installed (!!!), jBridger, old-school analog VST synths, PC (AMD 4-core CPU @ 3.7GHz, 16GB RAM, SSD drive (32GB)), Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64, Lexicon Omega & EgoSys Waveterminal 192L audio interfaces, ART DI/O tube A/D/A converter-Tung Sol tube, Novation RemoteZero SL controller, Novation X-Synth, BOSS DR-660 drum mach., Mackie MR5 monitors, Focusrite VRM Box, AT M50 headphones... blah blah blah...

Even when I load a project with a few instances of Kontakt in the tracks, it really doesn't take more then a few seconds longer than a 100% audio project.

Loading Kontakt and the instrument (samples) you have selected for that instance will only load the samples specific to that instrument into the memory. A few extra seconds at best.

When I load a project with Kontakt or another sample driven synth in it, I can see the synth load and the samples too... it pops up in a smallish window while it's loading...all the synths show in that window as they load. IIRC.... I've not been working much with specific synths recently and memory is short...

To me X2 does take a bit longer to load a project. It doesn't bother me that much, though.

If I open up older Sonar projects (pre X2a) , they load fairly quickly.
    Usually less than a minute.
All I have to do is "File-New-normal templete" and Sonar X2a
grinds for 3-5 minutes ( or longer ) on an empty project.
I have tried this on 2 different machines, same result.
Both are Win 7, 64 bit, 16Gig ram.
One PC is i5, the other is Q6600.
I have tried different audio drivers, interfaces. Like I mentioned,
    older projects load correctly, quickly.
Saving and reloading the same "new" project still has huge amount of
time wasted waiting. Before everyone jumps the gun and blames VSTs,
there are NONE loaded into the project.
Sonar loads all of my older project quickly, and they do use VSTs synths.
Is there something in the new file system structure for Win 8
    compatability?
Because old project load fine, but creating a new project templete
from Sonar causes this load and save delays.
    Re-saving and re-loading fixes nothing.
There is nothing in the project - - - -
Sonar boot time is decent, the timing  to rescan the VSTs are as I would expect.
Is there a bug report anywhere for this?
    thanks in advance
    Donny B

Agreed, same problem here. Loading simple audio-only projects with just a few tracks takes quite a bit to be ready to go. I'm booting from an SSD and using a 500GB HD for project data. Running Sonar X3e.

I still have no answer to my question about load times. The first load of the day in Sonar takes around 20-30 seconds. After the first project, every project I pull up from then on loads in about 5-6 seconds. If I shut down for whatever reason during the day when I re-boot that first project always takes a long time. It's as if the computer is re-acquiring the location of Sonar and all its plugs and components. I have even waited until it is fully booted up before I blame it on the boot process. Kinda weird. Not a major pain but an eyebrow raiser for sure.

Something about old threads just bugs me. But since it has life again. My two cents: New projects created in the current version of X# appear to load much faster than projects created in previous versions. This is true even after saving the older project (like created in X1) under the latest version (X3). Even with new projects, loading times is not as fast compared to loading into another DAW I use with similar project particulars. It's a Sonar thing I think... And with all that is going on under the hood - it may be necessary.

Similar to guitarhacker's response - I don't worry too much about the load times as long as it's not indicative of how stable the project is to work with in X3. Although I do admit, a snappier load time is less annoying even for a guy that did come from the porta-studio then 16-track/smpte time capsule. I'm not sure that even happened on earth anymore. Seems a little surreal nowadays. :)
