What's your "go to mic"?
Hi all,
Two questions, what is your "go to mic" and secondly what mic would you like to add to your arsenal?

depends on what i'm recording.
for guitar i use a sm57 and a ksm27.
for male vocal i use ksm44sl.
for female vocal i use an akg 414.
i want to get a ksm 313 next.
and yes, i have a good friend who is a shure distributer.

If you mean for vocals my go to mic was the AKG Solid Tube back when I had one. If I were buying now I would get a Shure KSM-44.

for vox, KSM-27. I'm happy with it for now and don't have any plans in the near future for any other mic purchases.

Of course, 90% of my non-direct recording is female vocals, so I don't really have or need very many mics in my arsenal.

Groove Tubes AM62
Between that & my AM52 for crispy stuff, that's all I need for the instruments I use. But I gotta say the idea of adding a ribbon mic is tempting just because I've never heard one before. I'd probably buy a GT Velo8 or maybe a Beyer M160.

Blue Woodpecker! The one I go to when I'm searching on the internet and dreaming away at the same time would have to be a Royer 122v, hmmmmmm  Pure Velvet !!!

Neumann U47 is my go to mic. I go to ebay to see if anyone is selling one cheap. I go to gearlslutz to read about how great they are. I go to the neumann site to read about how they are built. I keep coming back to the fact that I don't own one, will never own one but want one. In the mean time my Sterling ST79 is probably the best vocal mic I own among the following: SM7B AT4050 AT 4033 SM 57 MC-012 MXL V67 TLM 103

Pearlman TM-1 for pretty much anything...very U47 vibe kinda thing...and my Neumann KM-184's.

Red Type A with an R3 top. Either that or a violet grand pearl. They are distinctive but I like it. I have also got to the stage where I want for no other mics. I'm still trying to work out how that happened. It is quite liberating!!  ODdly, Oddboy

My next mic is probably going to be a Heil PR40, because I'm curious.
Then I want a pair of Coles 4038's... because I need them.
Then I'd like to revisit condenser mics... by purchasing some sort of modern u47 clone.

Go-to for what?
If you mean "desert island microphone" then I guess it would be the TLM-193, but that's a really tough call. It might be the SF-12 or even the SM-57. Nah, probably the TLM-193. If I owned one the U-67 would win, but I don't own one!
Next microphone purchase, I do have a couple of the Heil dynamics coming my way for eval, and if they are as cool as I hope they are then they'll be high on the list.
A pair of KM-84s is always at the top of the list, followed closely by a pair of Schoeps CMC-x with the MK41 capsules, but as you can probably guess, the money isn't there to buy either yet<G>!
I spent some time with the new TLM-67, and it's awfully nice, but again a bit out of my league at the moment.
And then there are ribbon microphones, I'd love to add a pair of R-121s, and at least one (maybe two) of the AEAs large ribbon models.
Turns out neither of these questions is easy to answer! Still, probably easier than if you'd asked about guitars! (And I'm going to the Great American Guitar Show this afternoon... why do I do these things to myself?)

Good question that raises a few more but lately I've been impressed by the Alctron mics. Particularly the valve 11A with it's surprising warmth for such a cheap Chinese valve mic. Other favorites include the Rode and Shures and even the M Audio releases. One desirable to add would of course have to be the U47.
ASUS H270, i7-7700, JLM BA & 1290, LA2A Opto4, loads of guff.

Any clean and bright U47 style condenser something that sounds like what I'm actually hearing.
On the other hand for added colour I want to replace my ancient AKG D12 which finally fell apart a few years back, the newer D112's just don't compare, in fact nothing does for close miking a kick drum.

Interesting choice, I've commonly had 414's underneath the snare and as OH's never come across an engineer brave enough to suggest one for the kick. btw I'd love to come over some day for a visit, if it ever happens I'll be sure to let you know...

Large sound with lots of definition Yeah, thanks Jim I'm gonna try that out if I ever get out of my current enforced retirement. btw I've been listening to the 'Jet City' demo's and they sound fantastic.
