What's Everyone Using To Record Guitar Direct to DAW?
Hi Everyone, Just wondered what everyone is using to record electric guitar direct to DAW, without using a mic'd up amp. I know this is a topic which has been asked a million times, but I wanted to see how you all do it, and what kind of DI boxes/Modelling Amps/etc work for you. I've tried almost everything, and wondered if there were any products new on the market? I'm not interested in using plug ins, as I think they sound p*** poor, more stuff like Pod's, Tech 21 Pedals etc. Thanks For Taking The Time To Respond. Scott

I use a Great River MP-2NV or Chandler TG-2 if I am going direct with guitar. Both work OK.

I use POD and sometimes a Mesa/Boogie pedal...not sure what it's called offhand. I'm reasonably happy with the POD...the Mesa pedal has a lot of gain but not enough high end. All the best,

I use a Boss VF-1 (multi effect) amp simulator, mostly JC-120, Vox or Matchless. For overdrive sounds I also use analog OD pedals and Guitar Rig cabinet simulator. Best, JH

I use a Roland VG-99 (recorded both affected and dry), an old Pod 2.0, and a Digitech RP-12. I've never relied purely on VSTs for guitar processing. Edited for typo.

I use a Boss GT-8 running into my Behringer mixer (flat eq etc), headed to my soundcard. I just make sure there's no reverb or delay on the settings, as those can change with the mix (add them in the FX bin of the audio track instead). The GT-8 needs some tweaking time to get good sounds, but once saved it's an amazing tool.

Digitech GNX2. I like it much better than the newer ones I've heard. Still out of it's 64 or so presets, there are maybe 3 that I use.

hairy: Hmmm ... that looks like an interesting little DI box - have you tried it on a bass? yes, i have.. but remember, it's a cabinet filter, so it's voiced for a 1x12, 2x12 open back, or 4x12 guitar cabinet. if your bass tone lends itself to that kind of EQ, then it will work fine. And although the PDI-09 is designed for guitar amps, you can also connect it to a pedal board (or preamp) for a great sounding DI straight to the console. The PDI-09 is very clean and transparent.

Racked V-Amp Pro with a Boss SX-700 and a Behringer Ultrafex II in the FX loop, going out to either my Hughes&Kettner Attax 80, or PC. Foot pedal for fast midi control, plus a BCR2000 to manage it all. Has its own mixer board for creating multiple versions dry/wet live or for recording purposes. Very convincing JC-120 'clean' sound, and that SX-700 is partly to blame there. Marvelous little thingy, if you are into 80's sounds, it has them all.

it depends, but I've narrowed my own choices to four: 1) Adrenalinn II - it really does a nice job, it responds to pick attach, it's under rated I think 2) Roland VG-8 - it's a ton of work to get it right, but when it is right it is very convincing. 3) Groove Tubes STP-G - does this count? About as close to a Fender Twin as one can get without speakers 4) H&K Blues Master and Cream Machine - not as clean and detailed as the other three, but comes in handy from time to time. Mostly I still rely on microphones in front of speakers - for some reason (real or imagined) I just prefer that sound.

hey, thats cool marcos! what i did, when i first got it, was plug it all in, and expect the palmer to sound exactly like the sound coming out of the speaker. of course, it doesn't work that way. you'll want to experiment with the tone settings, especially the treble, in combination with whichever of the 3 'tone switch' settings you select. how loud you play, will dictate the attenuator level (that's line level output now, not a POWER ATTENUTATOR... it does not do that) i typically boost the channel input low end around 80-120hz, just a db or so, wide Q, and sometimes i'll boost a touch of 2 or 3khz to get more definition. the way i use it, i go out of my amp head directly into the palmer, and i'm running my amp head extremely loud.... but, with the THRU output, i go to a WEBER Mass Lite attenuator, and bring the volume down going to my cabinet, so that i can get feedback off the cab, but not enough to get evicted. then, i have the option of either recording the cabinet as well with a mic, or just using the direct signal from the palmer. i can also turn the attenuator down all the way, and practically record at whisper volume, even tho the palmer is seeing the full output of my tube amp BEFORE it ever hits the attenuator! i record the palmer signal dry, always, and flat, and apply effects and eq at mixdown. i just adjust the amp, til i get the sound i want out of the palmer, using my Monitors and my headphones to dial it in. here's a shot of my setup:

I've had all kinds of stuff through here. The Pod is probably the most widely used but I've seen plenty of those floorboard units (Digitechs, Vox, Roland, Sansamp, etc). Sometimes we'll come right off the amp direct out. Had one of those Line6 Bogner amps in recently. Pretty nice. I don't know how you would choose one over the other anymore. They all sound pretty good to my ears. Good enough to get the job done.
