What's Your Rig?
I know a lot of you have your setup (computer-wise) in your sigs, but I was just curious what machines everyone runs, has run, recommends, etc? Anybody build their own? Anyone else (like me) use gaming setups? How many of you still run desktops? And....why? I started using gaming laptops several years ago. I used Alienware for a long time, but after having a few hard drive failures, I started using ASUS ROG gaming laptops and am absolutely thrilled with them. However, we're looking at some desktop rigs for gaming for the wife, and I started getting a bit jealous. They lack the portability obviously, but some of the MSI, ASUS, and CyberPower desktop rigs look pretty sweet with a lot of bells and whistles...that are just as powerful (if not moreso) than my rig.
Also, curious as to everyone's thoughts on Intel vs. AMD? Historically, for me, Intel chips have always performed better and withstood a heavier workload than AMDs, but again, looking at some of these rigs for the wife, AMD seems to have really stepped up their game (no pun intended) to appeal to the gaming crowd, with 6-core, 4 GHz+ chips and such. Thoughts?

If you like using high performance laptops, I don't think you can get better than Clevo shells.

build my own rigs, always have. most recent rig built a few months ago: Intel I7 4790K 1150LGA, 16GB corsair, soundproof case, onboard graphics. remember when building/buying a high performance set up for music recording, a graphics card is not as important as it is like in gaming. you don't need to spend 500.00 on a GC. use that extra cash on cpu or ram. I've used/use laptops (I have a mobile unit now) but I still do all my professional work on a desk top. the cooling, upgrades, maintenance is much easier to work with.

Yes I should add that I would only use a laptop if I wanted to be mobile. I have a desktop and a laptop at the moment and my desktop is the studio workhorse. I haven't really done any projects that the Clevo couldn't handle but a desktop is just so much nicer, cheaper, and easier to maintain.

I agree with the others in that my main workstation is a desktop. I have Sonar on a laptop on those rare occasions when I am doing something in the field, but would much rather do the heavy lifting on the desktop. Also, hope to move to dual screens in the not too distant future, as that can make a big difference in your workflow. You don't have to switch between track view and console view like I do now on a single screen. Just a thought...

Same here, my main studio computer is a self built desktop (rebuilt once in 9 years.) They are easier to work with and much more expandable from a drive/card perspective. I think they tend to be quieter too. I have sonar on a laptop, but I don't really use it much because the interface that is compatible with it is not very good as an interface. For remote recording I am more likely to use the BR800 as a standalone recorder anyway.

I always built my own, but Dell's we're so much quieter. Some to the point in my lab at work where one would even wonder if they were on. So I had a customer who forsook his Dell Precision Workstation w quad xeons leave it with me to "recycle" some years back. I took it for my DAW as it was powerful but very quiet. I put it in the closet off my mix station and close the sliding wood doors. - very quiet. The most power with the smallest noise footprint works for me. - no fans on the video card either. I use desktops as while I would love to mix on a recliner in the living room, I like the basement with the Mackie monitors and all the trappings of my audio workstation.

I'm happy with my Dell i5 laptop, Scarlett 2i2 interface, and headphones. For "non-profit" recordings, this is more than sufficient. Once recorded, I hand the WAVs over to a studio to mix and master in a great-sounding environment. I think you'd be hard-pressed to listen to my latest project and assume it was home-recorded... I'd like to get a decent set of monitors, but given my space limitations (shoebox of a condo) it's not happening. Other than that, I wouldn't want to change anything about my setup.

I use a rack mounted Creation Station, a custom-built PC by Sweetwater that is optimized for audio. I have since added a 1TB SSD for orchestral sample libraries, a second 1TB spinning drive for other sample libraries, and more memory (I went from 8 GB to 12GB). After two years, I had to replace the power supply and I went with a more robust unit.

A lot can be said for building your own systems. I built my Intel I7 rig for under 700 dollars. I know others who have paid 2X times that having it built for them or off the shelf. it makes sense to build your own and its not that difficult. look in to this option if your going to go with a desktop. if your going to buy a laptop, don't even attempt to build your own unless its a kit of sorts with interchangeable parts. some may also argue but I have found better performance streaming my audio files for cakewalk projects off an SSD vs. an HDD.

I have a Dell i3 second generation desktop. 1TB hard drive, 8 gigs memory. I despise laptops, because their small screens and limited USB ports. The built in speakers sound like garbage. With my desktop, I have a 24" monitor which is perfect for me. I'm using a Focusrite 18i8 USB interface. My audio goes into a Alesis RA-100 reference amp then to my Yamaha monitors and NS-10's. I don't want to go mobile. My computer has been able to keep up with all my demands and has run perfectly for years now. When this one dies, I'll definitely buy another Dell because this one has been rock solid and trouble free for a long time.

Like others here, I built my own rig. I went to Micro Center and bought all my parts even the case, which is padded inside. I picked out the MOBO I wanted, got the 32 GB.'s of Ram I wanted, selected 6 the internal fans I wanted with automatic temp sensing and adjusting. I selected my i5 4th Gen Haswell Processor, I chose my own GeForce Video Card with Direct Direct X 12 and my own cooling system. I selected my own two internal DVD writers and finally, I based my power supply on how much power my PC will need, not what a PC manufacture wants to give me. then I install it and was happy with the outcome. So, that is why I build my own PC, because I know what's in my Baby and I can change anything I want at any time!

Like the others, I've always used desktops that I've built myself from parts. More umph for the money and more flexibility to upgrade over time. Current system is an i7 chip, SSD for the OS, SSD for plugs and sample librarys, Spinning drive for audio, 32gb RAM. The machine is built in a 2-space rack mount server case and drives three monitors without breaking a sweat. The power supply isn't fanless, but the fan is super quiet most of the time. Same with the chip fan and case fan. The system is super quiet. I can easily record audio through condenser mics with no detectable fan/computer noise in the track.

I run an old Intel i7-2600 with 24GB Corsair RAM, 650W silent PSU and 3 x Seagate 2TB drives. Coolermaster Silencio case. The machine works 10+hours per day, 6 or 7 days per week and has been for about 6 years.
It may not sound impressive, but it is the heart of my studio and the tool I pay my way with. If anything goes wrong with the OS (Win 10 x64), I can grab a cloned drive from the safe, rip open the side and be back in business inside 10 minutes - before my clients have finished their coffee :O) It recently got its first PSU replacement because the old one got noisy. That took 30 minutes to replace and just a few bucks. I don't think you can say the same about the average laptop, neither about speed of repairs or longevity (I'm guessing). Anyhoo, that's my workhorse..

Same here except from the one in Dallas. Desktop here. As a bit of an equipment freak, the desktop allows much more external connections than a laptop. The only things I 'require' for my desktops are intel processors, Western Digital HDD's and Nvidia graphic cards. These are personal preferences but I won't stay home without them. :) I would also spec an intel motherboard but they quit making them. (sigh)

Desktop. Monster desktop. In thirty years of scratch-building ever-smaller PCs and servers (most of them rackmounts), I've also taken a tip from the gaming community and returned to the world of honkin' big towers. Re AMD vs. Intel, my experience mirrors your own. My last audio workstation was a scratch-built AMD and unreliable as hell. Random BSODs and system lockups were so predictable, in fact, - once every two or three days - I had Sonar doing automatic saves every five minutes. My latest machine is a scratch-built Intel i7 with dual SSDs in a RAID 1 configuration. [Can you tell I have zero tolerance for failure anymore?] The hardest part of this build was finding a motherboard that supports legacy PCI for my Lynx AES16 digital audio card. Thankfully, there's still a few motherboard manufacturers making new products with PCI slots, and I've been very pleased with this Asus P9X79 LE. I hate to jinx it, but even on Windows 10, this is proving to be my most reliable audio workstation yet. If you're interested, I composed a blog article and time-lapse video of the build, complete with parts list: Scratch Building the Audio Workstation of Penultimate Doom. These things get dated pretty quickly, but maybe it can help? Good luck!

Self built Desktop for sure. Nothing wrong with laptops, but I like that I can configure my desktop any way I want. Built mine about 3 years ago and haven't had a problem since. It's the 3rd one I've built in the last 12 years (first desktop was bought from a custom computer builder/shop). All except the custom build were solid. Next one will be self built as well.

Eleven year-old HP Windows Media Center computer with 2048 MB (!) of RAM, with an original Focusrite Saffire. And XP. It's okay; I'm using 12 year-old software.

Same here as most, with main DAW my own build and a laptop for the occasional live recording. I also use various Laptops for live playback at my solo and duo gigs. I have one just for lyrics now. I hate laptops! I rarely have had to spend time trouble shooting desktops. And it's always simple to upgrade and fix any issues that do come up. And who could live without 2 or 3 28" screens! I'm fighting with my friends son's 2 year old HP laptop and a Brand new Lenovo we bought for work right now. I ready to toss them both out the window. The HP wireless would not connect. after 2 days I gave up and did the re install from the back up drive. That fixed it. But Windows 7 is marginally supported and you just try and run windows updates!! The Lenovo's DVD drive is not recognized anymore after out wonderful W10 nuked it. Lenovo support only says to return it to them... at my cost 1 way! A dvd drive is less than the shipping but that voids the useless warranty. So please don't rave about laptops around me right now.. Buy an iPad and get real...,,Oh ya, can't run Sonar yet.. but it's coming..
