What's a good subwoofer for Mackie HR 24's?

Hey I've been looking at some subwoofers to compliment my Mackie HR 824's (original version).  I've been looking at the 10" versions from: KRK and JBL.  Any other good one's around the $300.00 or so price range that will work well with the Mackies?

Thanks

After moving my speakers slightly and changing a setting,  I think the only way to improve on the low end of the HR 824 (original version) is to add a 12" subwoofer.  I don't think a 10" will make enough difference.  Unfortunately that doubles the cost at a minimum.  So I'll have to hold off for a little bit longer.

The size of the speaker in a subwoofer isn't the main consideration for determining audio quality or bass extension at the extremes of frequency response.  The enclosure (ported, sealed, push-pull radiators?), crossover and controls (passive analog or digital?) and built-in amplifier (Class AB, H etc.) all affect the performance.  In the $300 range it's hard to expect great sound from a subwoofer.  You will have to do a lot of work to get the sub and the monitors to blend together seamlessly.

I'd try taking a look at a few vendors that get a lot of feedback here such as AudioMidi.  They seem to regulary come up with specials on monitors and subs.  Also, don't hesitate to ask dealers about B-stock subwoofers.  If they guarantee that a B-stock sub works well, and only suffers from a cosmetic defect like a scratch or dinged corner I'd look into it.  You could get a much better sub for the same price as an entry level piece of gear.

If price is no concern I'd suggest finding out if this guy is planning a subwoofer that will mate up well with his stereo monitors.  And stand back at least 300-feet when he turns it on:

I bought a Polk Audio 100w 10" sub when it was on sale for under $200.

It's a component from a home theater system but it works well and shakes the floor on low synth lines..... so I'm a happy camper with it.

Dang... I knew I bought too early.... I just saw this:  http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16882290034

and there are some even cheaper.  its the same one I have.

I'm not sure what you would gain. The HR824 is pretty flat down to 35 - 37 hz.

This is what I am finding with the new positioning.  The sub will help with some synths but that's about all that's below the 37Hz mark.

No matter what speakers you use to monitor, a dedicated sub will add a new dimension to the music.

There is more below 40hz than a few synths.   The impact of the kick is down there and it's very important in putting the proper punch in the music.

With 5" speakers the sub will be amazing.  With 8" speakers you will still appreciate the sub. Not to many people mix with larger speakers but the sub is generally a good idea with them all.

Yea, you can have impact below 40hz....but usually the need for sub in that region ( for mixing ) is recognize it's there...then get rid of it.

We use the Mackie sub that goes with the HR824's at a studio I work in, and when tuned well, it is so vital for any music with any B**lz on the bottom end lol

    Hello Friends,

Mackie 824s are flat down to 37 Hz, and that's plenty low for most types of music. Now, if you're doing 5.1 surround movie mixes, then you definitely need a sub. But for typical pop and classical music production, the 824s alone are all you should need.

    Thanks

For Electro and bass driven pop, hip hop and R&B, the Mackie sub has been quite helpful for us.
