Jonbouy I'm easy but some people get really hung up about what they use. Not Macca. It was reported when asked what kind of string he used he said the silver ones. Or did I just make that up?

oh well.... I've read that 80/20 Bronze strings sound brightest when new but quickly loses the brightness as the strings age. I've read that Phosphor Bronze strings sound mellower than new 80/20 bronze strings but the tone remains similar as the strings age. Has anyone ever heard it? I have a big plastic box of string packs and have been using a wide variety of acoustic strings for years with the intention of realizing I like one set best. I haven't realized anything. I know what I like on my electric guitars... but I am getting more interested in recording some nice acoustic tones this season. I know I don't want any *plastic* coated strings. Does anyone have an actual reason why they like a particluar set of acoustic "steel" 6 string guitar strings? Thanks. best regards, mike

mike_mccue I know I don't want any *plastic* coated strings. You're supposed to take them out of the plastic wrapper, I think. Actually my all time favorite acoustic steel string is Darco 80/20 bronze. They have a beautiful tone and seem to last well. Very hard to find around here though.

Is the Darco Martin's cheapest line? I used some Martin SP 80/20 last night when I strung up my acoustic. I wonder what the difference is?

I use the D'Addario Phosphor Bronze on my Taylor. The reason I use them is because my Taylor (like most of them) has a pretty "crisp" tone, and these strings have a more warm tone that helps tame that down. I've tried brighter strings like the Elixir 80/20 and it was just too bright. The D'Addario's are pretty cheap too and last a while before they start getting dull.

Mike for acoustic guitar I'd think the most popular is bronze, which produces a bright, crisp sound. Phosphor bronze probably second most popular choice and produces a bright, but is slightly warmer and darker sound than bronze. Brass is brighter and more metallic sounding than bronze. Brass seems to work well to brighten up muddy sounding acoustics. I put some Elixir Nanoweb 80/20 Bronze on my Guild and I like them. ( that's the guitar I used for Spockpits Revenge....if you ever heard that) I'm not certain because I've haven't bought one but I think Taylor guitars ship with these on them....I guess that means something. But it's really all about tone. Magnetic properties, instrument, style..etc. Knowing a little about the metal tonal properties may help one get the strings that work well with the instrument...and player. How they're built comes into the picture too. Flatwound/ Roundwound. Of course I think you already know this....but good topic. They make the claims- we let our ears make the decisions.

I have had the same experiences with the same strings. For soft recording tones I am leaning in the direction of nylon.

I have been a fan of Ernie Ball Earthwoods for a long time - used the medium lights most of the time. What's kept me using them is that their timbre is the same from low to high, over a variety of chord voicings. You don't have a range where the tone suddenly gets brighter or darker, etc.

I've just strung a set of Martin 92/8 Phospher Bronze extra lights and I Am pleased so far. A nice brightness for my rather average sounding (inexpensive) acoustic.

I tried a set of Elixers last year for the first time. In fact they're still on my guitar a year later and still sound very good.
