What's wrong with my lava lamp?

Plugged it in at about 1:30PM today. It's almost 6:00PM.

All the lava started bubbling to the top by about 2:30PM. Then I took a nap. After I woke up at 4:30PM all the lava was back at the bottom in one big ball kind of rotating.

Normal behavior?

Is it a used lava lamp?

The goo goes "dead" after a while and just kind of blobs out at the bottom. Something about the chemical composition of the goo. It simply stops dancing and burbling after extended use.

I had one as a teen and eventually it just stopped doin' its thang.

I'm guessing that might happen even if it's "new" but has been sitting around for a long time (like vintage dealy).

Meh.

I just imagine bubbles in my mind as I record if I need ambiance.

Oh... and they are generally most active in the first couple hours after being turned on. After that they kinda do the blob thing so if you walked away for that time period you may have miseed the show.

I had a friend who had the same problem with his lava lamp. Jokingly I told him to pick up the hot lamp and shake it as hard as he could for 30 seconds to "stabilize" the wax. He took my "advice". It was about 30 days before the lamp returned to normal...........He almost forgave me..........

It's probably stuck on the "bass player" setting.  Try lead guitar for a better show.

8 HRS now. Still a big ball at the bottom.

I'll turn it off when I go to bed and try in the morning.

Re: What's wrong with my lava lamp? 2017/06/10 16:30:23 (permalink)
They are sensitive to ambient temperature, since it's the temperature difference from top to bottom that initiates the movement. In a hot room, the wax floats to the top and stays there. In a cold room, it settles to the bottom and stays there. If the lamp is shaken, the wax will separate and needs a couple days to re-congeal into larger blobs.

If the lamp used to work but does no more, first check inside the base - there is a spring in there that helps conduct heat to the vessel, that can come loose if the lamp is dropped. Next, replace the light bulb. If it's old it may not be emanating as much heat as it used to. It might just not be screwed in all the way. You can also (cautiously) try using a higher-wattage bulb. Most use a 25-watt bulb but some standard-size units use a 40-watt bulb. The big ones use 60W or even 100W for the giant ones, but I wouldn't advise them unless you want to true volcanic experience.

That's assuming you can still buy an incandescent bulb in California. Those faux-green do-gooders down there (they're here now, too, thanks to high-priced CA real estate) would have you believe that compact florescents can do everything an incandescent can do. (Try putting one in your oven, or in a spray booth!)

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Hmm. I'm a bass player and it takes me at least 5-6 hours to start working too.

I hope nobody tries shaking me.

Who has time for shaking or stirring when you're thirsty?

*Pfft...*  As far as YOU know!

If mine gets too hot it stops bubbling or lava'ing or whatever. I plugged mine into an old X10 lamp dimmer and dim it a just a little after it warms up. Otherwise, after a few hours it just collects at the top. FWIW, mine is about 6 months old.
