When I'm Gone
Here is a new a mix and mastering of my song, "When I'm Gone". The last version I had put too much compression on it and it sounded kinda squeezed. I am realizing how important it is to get my music to sound good in headphones. It is nice to have it sound great on big speakers but most people (including myself) listen to music on headphones (earbuds). Hope you get something out of this song. RR

Nice song Rex, though a sad one, well presented nicely captured, did you not want to expand the instrumental break with a little lead?

There is a violin solo there but it is not very "leadish" sounding, it is really more of a pad. I wonder if a guitar would be too heavy or maybe a ghosty synth lead, any suggestions? Maybe echoy bells?

Perhaps give it more presence and add some echo and a nice spacey reverb

Wow, that's quite a tear jerker, but very well done. Your voice just shines, and the production overall is sparkling. Nashville is looking for you.

Wookie, I will gladly give it another look at the solo, thanks for your suggestion. I did notice I have a tendency to turn the middle solo part up then the second verse comes in loud so you are right about it needing more in the center. Lynn, many thanks for your encouraging comment! It is a pleasure touching hearts that still can feel great emotions. :)

Nice voice fer sure. Kind of reminded me of Mannheim steamroller! Only with some vocal drawl. Mix seems fine but I might bring the snare up, and th e drums generally could be boosted. I listened on headphones. Good tune! -Tom

Damn, you have a great voice and you use it very well. Lyrics were a little tedious for me, but the story was interesting and fit the mood nice. The song is begging for a chorus like part, and I'm fairly convinced you'd have a hit on your hands. Nice work, really.

Rex Great song! Your voice just comes across so well on this. I listened via headphones. I liked the 5th line in the verses, the foreboding words with the minor keys in the background.
This is just me probably but that bit about "random gunfire" kind of took me out of it. Seemed like another story line there that needed to be settled. I could accept car crash or something that happens every day and not give it another thought. Just my reaction, like I said.
Hope you do well with your music.

When I'm Gone https://www.reverbnation.com/rexredmusicartist/song/26447051-when-im-gone Okay, this version has an added "solo" component, I also turned up the drums to give them some needed presence. As for the random gun fire line Bjornpdx, I also find that line difficult and an abrupt shift in the song. She could have drown by the river or as you said it could have been in an auto accident. Yet, the reason why I used random gunfire is because of the relevance of that subject in the US where I live. I wanted it to hit home. It is an abrupt line but so is gun fire, abrupt. I could not think of any other way to say it and singing that line was also a task in itself but I delivered it as best I could. I appreciate your opinion and it is something I have debated over also. I could not bring myself to change it. That was the purpose of the song to bring attention to the associated grieving and misfortune of people who are lost due to the abuse and misuse of guns. Please critique the song and these changes. I will try and address your suggestions in future mixes. Thanks for listening Cakewalk people! :) RR

I loved the song Rex. As soon as the vocals started, I immediately flashed back to the early/mid 70's. Sounds like something James Taylor or Bread might have done back in the day. Your voice and the lyrics were great. I feel like the drums and bass need a little more low end, but maybe that's just my preference. Great song!
