When Posters Imbed Youtube Videos in Their Posts ...

Is it just me or do you find that opening a post with imbedded youtube videos makes the page open slowly - excruciatingly slowly if there are a lot them?  I don't mean just pasting in a URL but rather embedding it so that you see the picture - and I don't even know how that's done anyway.

In any case, this is consistent behavior here (using mostly IE).  Do others have this experience?

The how is

[tube]***[/tube] with the link from the 'share' part of the youtube page, strip the 's' from https, then place the link where *** is.

As to the slow page loading issue, no haven't noticed that here

Let's put it this way: IE is the WORST browser currently out there.  I'm guessing that's part of your issue.

My viewing only slows down while I run a process that converts what Beep writes to a format readable by an adult.

lol... I just totally ruined this thread for myself to make that joke.

I'll edit it... later.

Seriously though I think it is an HTML5 thing.

Youtube switched to the HTML5 vid platform a while back IIRC but I think what's happening is some sites and/or browser/OS/etc settings are forcing (some of) our browsers/systems to load whatever flash version YT is currently serving up to us dinobots (so instead of the cake forum fetching the HTML5 embed in our browsers it's mucking about and fetching the old flash version which I'm sure google is trying to kneecap as best it can).

Anyhoo... that's just a guess and I'm likely blowing bubbles out my butt... however....

Opinions on this topic may vary .
In my case I prefer to see and watch the embedded video as part of a post on the page I'm reading   .
If I want to go over to u tube and read the comments or deal with the auto play button .
I will go over there and do that on my own .

No problems with it using Edge, except for the 'Now Playing' thread which takes a bit longer to load, unsurprisingly.

Ever since I replaced the almost useless all-in-one Comcrap modem/firewall/switch/router with a new Netgear CM1000 modem and Netgear Nighthawk 2600 router, I've had pretty much NO issues at all.  I'm getting a rock-solid 140+ Mbps down and 12+ Mbps up that doesn't drop.

Yes, I'm happy with it.

No problems here (opera) and even better it annoys the crap out of the one that sounds like a t-rex song*, so it's win/win.

Let's put it this way: IE is the WORST browser currently out there.  I'm guessing that's part of your issue.

Just did a test.  Chrome required nearly 30 seconds to open this page.  IE required nearly twice that.  Did the IE test second and don't know if caching made it faster that it otherwise would have been (I suspect not).

Even the Chrome time is unacceptable IMO.  If there were a visual indicator for embedded youtube content, I would elect to bypass most of those threads.

Edge takes 2 seconds. It took 10 seconds to open the 'Now Playing' thread, which is 39 pages of embedded YouTube links.

Here's how I would do that if I REALLY wanted to get rid of all the youtube embeds...

And this is a brute force method.

I've been using NoScript (in Firefox) for YEARS. It blocks EVERYTHING until I manually allow it (whitelisting specific domains).

I have "youtube dot com" and "googlevideo dot com" whitelisted in NoScript (that second one used to be something like "ytimg dot com" or some such but since Google bought youtube they've been tinkering with a bunch of crap).

Essentially if I disabled those scripts the embedded vids here on the forum would go away (at least they used to).

However since I decided youtube is the easiest route for me to get my bizarro/spontaneous music fixes these days (amongst other things... for example I've been watching classic boxing matches lately) I've completely left them whitelisted and just either a) avoid the offending thread and/or b) until it spawns a new page (no more vid embeds for every refresh/post).

This is kind of why you never see me in the "Now Playing" fred. It just loads too danged slow over here.

Now the downside to using NoScript (or some of the newer scriptblocking add ons... No Script is apparently considered "Legacy" now... lol) in this situation is if you totally blocked youtube/google video then you would have to allow it every time you wanted to watch a vid on YT... which would then reactivate the embedded vids here on the forum next time you refreshed until you reblocked youtube again.

So like I said that's brute force action but it is how I've been intertubing for years. It can get a little tedious from time to time always keeping track of all that crud on the sites I frequent BUT it's essentially full control over what an external server can load onto my system/screen (well not entirely but it clears away a HUGE amount of useless gack that makes the real content load much faster).

I do still think though that there is some transition from Flash to HTML5 video shtuff. I know it was a big to do back when I was learning me some HTML/CSS a few years ago.

So maybe us laggers should hunt about our browsers to see if there is an option to switch our defaults to HTML5 video when it is available (which I think is for everything on youtube now).
