When You Need a Friend, w/ Rik, Ed & Danny

When You Need a Friend

Well, Rik said he wouldn't mind doing a fast song, so I sent him this one.  I loved what he did on it. Then Ed and Danny got involved somehow and, well, here it is.  :)  Thanks, guys!  I learned a lot once again. (and realized once again how far I have to go!!)

Piano & composition:  me
Guitar:  Rik
Bass: Ed
Drums: Ed, Danny & me
Rhythm Guitars, finale guitars: Danny  (sorry I spaced out there, Danny!)
Production: Ed
Coach: Danny

I'm way behind on listening to all the tunes on here.  I hope to catch up soon.  Leaving for vacation tomorrow...hopefully I'll have some time (and good internet connection) to listen.  :)

Very cool Janet. I like the song very much but I think if you watch the movie "Twins" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito, this may be already done. It's been a long time since I saw that movie so don't hold me to it. :)

Either way, what a great tune! I enjoy all these tunes you do very much.

Well done to all of you!

Good to branch out Janet. A good blend of different instruments, that prob shouldnt work but does. What done it for me was the introduction of the hihat midway through which aced the groove!

Really enjoyed this. Very catchy instrumental, a little like Focus in their softer moments. Excellent mix. Definitely has an 'end credits' feel about it. Nice work folks, good collab!

    Nice job by all here....

This tune sounds real familiar on the opening riff.

The prod and mix are very good. Sounds like Rik is branching out too. Good on ya, Rik!

GP:  Thank you!  I haven't seen that movie in about 20 years, so I wouldn't have a clue.  I hope it's not the same.  Anyway, so glad you like it.  :)

Thanks Robby.  Good to see you again.   Ready to do our next collab yet?  :)

Thanks so much, Cian.  I sure hope this combination of instruments works cause I like to use them a lot.  :)  I'll have to go back and listen for that hi hat...that was Ed's doing, unless you mean the slow part. (and I love his drums!  I rather liked mine, but his do sound better.)

Thank you James.  Glad you liked it.  :)

Thanks Scott.  Danny thought it sounded familiar too, but neither of us can figure out what it would be.  I usually try not to rip off the obvious riffs but I'm always afraid I will inadvertently sometime.  And yeah, I thought Rik did a fabulous job too.  :)

Big smile from you, Herb?  Now that's sayin' somethin'!  :)  Thank you! It was fun to get Danny to play on one of my tunes.  I love that opening slide of his especially.

Real nice – clean, clear with an energized Americana flavor to it . Softer contrasting sections (sparse) make it all the more fun when it kicks in. Has a bit of a Bruce Hornsby groove which is always infectious. Great job.

Thanks for the kudos on the mix/prod. I had fun working on this and as always a big nod to Danny for his assistance/pushing me on the production side. That guy can hear crickets up to three miles away (I swear it's true).

@Janet, thanks for letting me in on this one, but...... wait....... just one more thing......

    Janet,

Great post, very catchy and inspirational song.   I could hear something like this during a movie when the underdogs or the good guys are making a comeback....  Like the ups and downs, the soft and in your face parts.  Very nicely done.   Oh,  and the performances aren't bad either  Great job to all involved.  It is quite amazing the things you can learn collaborating with others on this forum, and you have listed on outstanding team of players on this composition.

Nice playing by DD on the song... oh yeah, and everyone else too.

Hahah thanks man...I just laid down some rhythm to hopefully give the tune a little power. Hahaha Janet asked me about the pick scrape thing and had never heard of that, Herb. But yeah, you got me figured out there. :) LOL @ pick flicks...man, I hit someone so hard with one this one time....I never flick them anymore. I know...how hard can ya possibly hit someone with a pick?! It was one of those unlucky moments where it went into boomerang mode...and had a bit of an edge on it because it was used. I think the chick played into a bit though because I was giving her hugs and apologizing and well, you know, sometimes they like the attention. I did too...for once it wasn't me apologizing to a dude since I'm always such a dude magnet. LOL! :)

Thanks paulo...Rik and Janet did it all though. I just came in the middle of the project and offered a few little things here and there, helped with the dirty rhythm guitars and the ending with the harmony lead. Then Ed came in and took over and he and Janet hashed it all out. Fun song though...we knew the influence came from something, but none of us could put our finger on it...so we went with it and had a blast. :) Thanks for the kind words.

Axually? Yeah I guess I could work on that one? I'm also working on an Indigo Girls cover? Don't know why? But it was speaking to me. Also? I may be trying to write a new original? Irons in the fire... Was on the left coast all last week? And I have the boy this weekend (me n Clyde always have a good time together.) It all cuts in to the studio time :-(

I knew it was you even without proper credit. You just that smooth or schmooz style that is unmistakable. TBH, I'm not really sure it fit in real well. To me, it seems out of place for the song. Either way though, it is a great bit of tunage and everything blends well.

Haha thanks for the correction notes Ed! I coulda sworn I played a dirty lil guitar on this....that darn Rik always getting double credits! Hahaha. :) Glad you finally heard some of that stuff we talked about, Ed. At least you know I'm only half insane. :)

Janet, thanks for letting me be a part of this. I had a blast talking with you and assisting with it. This was a major change for you in my opinion and you and the boys adapted very well together. Great song! :)

TBH, I'm not really sure it fit in real well. To me, it seems out of place for the song. Either way though, it is a great bit of tunage and everything blends well.

Listening to it again, some of the classical parts are somewhat buried.
Hmm...you really think it sounds out of place? There's not that much rhythm in it really. I think if the drums wouldn't have been added, I wouldn't have put in any dirty rhythm guitars. I thought they kinda gave it a nice little kick since Rik (the guy playing the main guitar line) was kinda using acoustic and electric at the same time. I tried to go super light on the gain and Ed tried to mix the rhythms in the back so they didn't make it sound like a rock tune...we were cautious of the high end so they didn't lash out too much but we didn't want them too dark either. I guess it's just a matter of opinion...but Janet liked them so we went with it. Thanks for the listen. :)

I hear you Danny on how far a pick, thrown/flicked properly can fly.

I was at the TAXI rally a few years back... I went to a one on one mentoring session with Jason Blume. Upon returning to my seat in the main auditorium, Jeff Steele was on stage talking about songwriting and then he got up and performed one of his tunes "Gone" at the end. He flicked the pick and it went flying. I was about 12 rows or so back...setting on the aisle seat.
The pick flew half the distance and hit the floor and started sliding.... it slid to a stop right by my foot. I picked it up.  It went a good 25 to 30 feet.
