When a "known" musician walks into the bar.
A friend of mine was playing in a bar the other night, a few originals thrown in with a lot of covers. His band is tight enough that they'll sometimes learn a song onstage and run through it with an audience. He was playing along and David Wilcox walked in. Apparently Wilcox asked him to play Downtown Came Uptown (but didn't join in). Is that a cool thing? Someone asking "hey, i like you - how would you sound doing MY hit?" Or is it an arrogant thing? "hey, play my song, I think it's awesome."

First tell me who David Wilcox is and than I will tell you if he was being arrogant. I've never heard of him, so I'm going with, "yes, an arrogant sob!"

That said... I have never met the man so I have no idea what he's like. Since he's a well loved old school Canucker music icon I'm gonna say... probably pretty cool. And his music just friggen' drips "cool" anyway... despite him being a rather unattractive dumpy old Canadian white guy... even in his prime. lol hestillfriggenrulesthoughsoasfarashismusicologicalexperimentationz

I'm thinking that describes most of us on this forum. Subtracting "Canadian" of course.

Seriously tho guys... check out that Bearcat link. The guy is a maniacal guitar player and has mastered the guit/vocal interplay. As far as modern blues/rock guit heros/influences of mine I'd put Wilcox just behind SRV. He really is a (and again I'll say this in Canadian-ese) FRIGGEN' awesome guitar player.

Just for an interesting example of what getting sucked into the Canadian 80's/early 90's music biz looked like... Layin' Pipe Complete and utter (or is that udder?) foolishness. Mr. Wilcox still managed to get that filthiness on the airwaves... like regularly. So as crap as all that was... I still doff mine cap at him.

Kind of novelty songs to me. Good playing, good voice, witty writing but somehow (for me) it misses the mark. But, as myolpal says, "that's what makes a horse race".

Funny thing is I haven't listened to a lot of this stuff for years and ya... the "solos" are pretty arse to my ears these days but that dood kept everything else tighter than a proverbial drum. I think, as a young man and now as an old(er) man I glommed onto the sheer energy of the mofo. He just looooves playing/hurting that piece of wood as much as I do. Kind of like a George Thorogood deal. Even as an old timer he's a rocka... Hypnotizin' Boogie Live Here's the OG studio version... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvOkt2lhxFQ And Hot, Hot Papa... just cuz. Keep in mind I said "influence/hero"... not "best"... because that would be silly. Everyone knows Bapu is the BEST guitar player in the world.

Kenficious say , there is a big difference between a known musician who walks into a bar VS a KNOWN MUSICIAN that gets carried into a bar with his or her entourage ... The first type walks in , wants to sit in , play your guitar on stage and tries to leave the club with your girlfriend . The second type gets carried in hidden by the shoulders of the entourage . Now there's a Wave of new Energy and disbelief on the part of the locals . It starts Raining Money , the place goes crazy , folks don't care who's on stage any more .Then you get a sinking feeling in your gut that its all over when you look up from your pedal boards guitar tuner and you see all the chicks just left the club to go party with the NAME Musicians .... It's a good thing that you have 2 set lists because now it's time to use your set list # 2 ... The set list you use when ever you play a Sausage Factory all the best , Kenny

Speaking of brushes with Canucker "Celebrity" this guy... I'm An Adult Now popped into an after hours independent musicians* open mic I tried to get going when I was like 19yo. He was nice but very quiet. Him and his buddy kind of kept to themselves and once I/we realized the event was just kind of turning out weird (nice, kind of cool but defs weird) we let them go hang out on the upstairs patio on their own. *by that I mean me and a bunch of other crazy street musicians I knew... who brought some of their even CRAZIER street musician friends. Really it was a mix of really interesting, oddball neo folk stuff and pure mental illness smeared with a fine veneer of music type noises

Then there's these guys... Sloan - Good In Everyone (song starts at around 2:11) Way ahead of their time as far as the full on Indie/Hipster movement IMO (as evidenced by that intro... lol). Of course it's kind of bubble gummy sounding but I always kind of liked them even in the throes of my teenage metal angst. Anyhoo (and, Sluggo... this happened at the C&D) one of the Sloan doods (pretty sure it was the singer guy) joined forces with my local pub's kind of house band spazzos (who were/are also really friggen' good/talented/theatrical fellos) and put on a Halloween gig. He was mostly on drums and friggen' KILLED it! The whole band just blazed out on all sorts of weird nostalgia rock with kiss makeup (and a couple covers), gorrilla masks, lights/smoke (in a tiny little pub with a TINY little "stage" if you could even call it that). Great time and of course everyone wanted me to meet the guy which I think might have been kind of awkward for both of us but he was pretty cool and you could tell he just LOVED playing music.

Holy crap. I haven't heard this tune in ages and certainly not since I've twisted my ears around mix type stuff... Check out this mix... Underwhelmed - Sloan Is it just me or is that a really, REALLY good friggen' mix? Also, Baps I think you might dig these dudes. Lots of interesting but subtle bass work and lots of old school honey dripping vocal harmonies.

OMG, I haven't thought of Max Webster in YEARS. I saw them a couple of times when they toured with Rush, and then they just faded from my mind. What a wake-up! While looking up their discography to see what was released after, I found the following (available from Amazon on 6 October for $83.02 (CDs; the vinyl set is $237.99 ); Day 1 for me): http://ventsmagazine.com/...ter-vinyl-cd-box-sets/
