Freddie H I'm "pro" on many things but I don't get this one? Don't want to type, don't use keyboard? I don't have a keyboard on my desk space. It's tucked away on a pull out shelf under my work surface. I work in the dark. Until X1 I had no need to use my keyboard other than to enter my login and name a project. A computer keyboard just clutters the work surface which just has my notes, a mouse mat and my midi keyboard on it. A computer keyboard is so pre-Windows.

"I wonder why SONAR before X1 had all this cluttered icons in the top?" Possibly because your assistant engineer never took a moment to turn off the ones that you didn't prioritize? best regards, mike

In the past we could turn almost all the buttons we didn't like and they all could have hot keys... best of both worlds. Now we are stuck digging around or depending on hot keys. I love my mouse... it makes my desk top a control surface. Say high to Rick Ruben for me!!! best regards, mike

It wouldn't be bad to have the option to add new stuff either in X1. But what should the rest of GUI control panel go? Should the new icons "Option" be add under it?

I love my keyboard. I love my mouse. It would be nice if we had the option of doing it whichever makes sense to us. I'd like to be able to have the option to work in the way that suits me. Would love to be able to customize that control bar the way that I could with the 8.5.3 transport bar... But my initial investigation leads me to think that's not possible.

I think if you start with the notion, as I am personally thinking, that there is lots of wasted space in the new ui... you have a lot of options.

Not to say of course that a program shouldn't allow any method to work with, but personally speaking if I was forced to sacrifice something of the two, that would be mouse-clicking.

Indeed.... ...IMO, still we are all turning around it..... point being that a program SHOULD ACTUALLY allow ANY method.... And, because and thank to that, personally speaking, I'm one of those who would largely prefer mouse-clicking..... Unfortunately, SONAR X1 has lost much of THAT power, and many of us feel it's a real issue... Cakewalk should just take notice of that....

I'm all for making improvements (which includes making better or more efficient use of space). Have you tested the Sonar X1 Helper Utility (from benstat)?

I've been thinking about that... At first I was picturing the control and and another bar/area that one could opt for one/other/both... The second area could simply be a toolbar area... But thinking how much wasted space would likely occur, I'm now thinking that a single area that housed either/both area in a re-sizable zone... So we might use the snap and trasnport modules in Control bar and our choice of toolbars in the remaining area...? That would make me feel REAL good!

I'm all for making improvements (which includes making better or more efficient use of space). Have you tested the Sonar X1 Helper Utility (from benstat)? Hi Jim... Yes... it's currently doing a nice job helping out with a few issues... More for some than others (abilities).. His next update is expected out around Wednesday... Currently my main use for it is hiding the multidock... It's only a little more space, but it helps... I sometimes use the full screen option as well but loss of the project name & clean/dirty status (as well as the min/max/close buttons) makes full screen mode a little uncomfortable for me... The extra buttons in the current beta version are helpful for thos who prefer buttons for some basics such as save/undo/redo... In this instance it doesn't do much for me as those are such universal shortcuts I use them everywhere all the time (lots of programs as well as OS's)... Check it out... It won't hurt your system at all... doesn't even need an install just put it in a folder and launch... Keni

Mod Bod I wish I could say that it is funny because SONAR has had it all for quite some time but it's becoming not so funny to me. It's getting to be a pain when Cakewalk is trying to be all things to all people. I wish they would decide who they want to be and who they want to sell product to and then get on with it. Me, I prefer 100% configurability. Right down to every menu system and widget. To me, 100% configurability is trying to be everything to everyone. Simplifying the GUI and moving toward a common workflow is picking a direction and getting on with it. I mean this in all seriousness and make this point to make you consider: Could it be that the direction they picked doesn't fit your ideal and that what you really want is for them to be all things to all people, so that they can continue to be what you want? I think configurability is desirable. We also have to face the fact that making a 100% configurable system is enormously complex and error-prone, and possibly slower and less stable as a result. We also want a fast and stable DAW. These are at opposite ends of a decision-making spectrum so far as designing a product. We want a lot of features and all the bugs wrung out before release(not to have things rushed out the door as some have suggested) yet we also want to reserve the right to crab and moan when the release hasn't dropped by a certain date. We want the patch to fix everything and make everything more configurable and complex, and yeah, by the way, why the heck isn't it here yet? As users, we demand a lot. We demand a lot of things that are opposing. Trying to please everyone is impossible. I think Cakewalk do an admirable job at the balancing act. They stumble here and there, but usually when they do they try their best to make it right given some time. pete

This is a good opportunity for me to reiterate my opinion that Cakewalk itself set the expectation that Pro Audio/SONAR could be so versatile that it could legitimately be everything to all people. After setting that expectation so clearly by offering a little of this and a little of that as well as an admirable amount of customization capabilities it seems as if Cakewalk has suddenly hit the brakes and run off the road map. The loss of easy access to your/mine/their favorite command entry method isn't just a change in direction... it's like hitting the brakes and having passengers fly thru the front wind screen. all the best, mike

Once again I'm here to agree with Mike... In their' zeal to create such a creature, they did! We had it and it works... The bugs it has are mostly still with us in X1 (with some new ones added)... Tho a few have been addressed and either working or near working... should they release when things aren't perfect? Absolutely! Nothing is ever perfect... Do we expect too much? No we expect what we know is possible... (tho maybe difficult)... Most of the things we're discussing here don't even approach the difficult... If there are shortcuts, they can easily be buttons (and vice-versa) so what's the problem? Don't think it looks good for first time users? fine make the control bar and multi-windowed approach the default.... Just let me add toolbars the the control bar area (or some such) and that issue can be put to bed.... What's all this arguing about? If someone doesn't want to use/expose these tools, they don't have to... Can anyone think of any other relase they came out with that didn't have a feature previously available? Welll... I can think of one... The studioware creation stuff... but what else did we ever lose? New things were gained, not lost! ...and even with this it will STILL not be everybody's cup of tea.... That's why there are others who use PT/DP/etc... They prefer that! I continue to ramble on just to elucidate! (hopefully) Make Marvelous Music!!! Let's not nit-pick favorite tools... l ;-)
