I performed live with BOC about 10 years ago. True story.
I have been a BOC fan since the first album (still my favorite). They were scheduled to play a show at a small open venue in Clear Lake (about 30 miles south of where I live).
I bought a high quality cowbell and a drum stick and brought them to the show. Since it was an open venue (no assigned seats and standing on the floor), I got close to the stage. Buck Darhma saw me with the cowbell and laughed. He told me to hang on.
When Don't Fear the Reaper (Reefer?) came up, Buck pointed at me to play the cowbell part and made the "finger across the neck" gesture to stop. All through the song, I followed Buck's directions and totally did the cowbell part for Reaper.
Honestly given the popularity of the SNL skit, I expected tons of people to have cowbells. Nope. Me and a guy I brought with me to the show who was to embarassed to play it.
So I performed live with BOC.
