Where are MIDI files?

I'm using Cakewalk Music Creator 3. I have saved a CWP project file.
In it I can hear the audio from my digital piano connected via MIDI to
USB. However, I can't find a MIDI file on my computer. Also, I can
hear the playback only through the piano speakers.

In the project, I have Audio1, Audio2, MIDI1, and MIDI2. The MIDIs are
the only things that record the piano. The Audio parts record but
there is always nothing played back. Any ideas how I can fill these
Audio parts to generate an MP3 file?

My setup is:
XP Pro SP2 (HP Pavilion zd7000 laptop)
Playback: Conexant AMC Audio
Recording: Conexant AMC Audio
MIDI Playback: Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth

I have these in Music Creator under MIDI devices:
Inputs: Cakewalk Music Connector 1
Outputs: Microsoft MIDI Mapper
Cakewalk Music Connector 1

Thanks,
Brett

Brett - audio and MIDI are two completely different things, that's why the tracks are completely different in MC3. Midi tracks have DATA in them from your keyboard - not sounds. Audio tracks are for recording AUDIO only, so if you don't have any audio devices (guitar, microphone, or keyboard...but see below) connected to your mic or line input of your sound card, then you won't record any audio.

note: the keyboard can be connected to record either MIDI OR AUDIO. to record MIDI, you connect the MIDI outputs to your computer (various ways to do that, but you have already accomplished this, so I won't go into it again). To record AUDIO from your keyboard, you must connect your AUDIO OUTPUT (usually the headphone output) from your keyboard to the MIC OR LINE input of your sound card. You then set up an AUDIO track to receive input from that mic or line input of your sound card, arm the track and play your keyboard.

I strongly suggest you work thru the tutorials included with the software. they are very helpful.

Thanks Beagle. That has definitely solved my problem.

I have another issue on the sound. Sometimes when I play the piano (with headphones connected to the piano) and have it connected via the MIDI to USB cable, it sounds very cheap and digital. But sometimes it sounds just fine. There is some condition if I connect a certain way, I get a very cheap sound and if another way, it sounds fine.

I have two questions in this regard:
How can I get better sound quality to the audio part?

How can I get the sound I hear back from the piano to be good quality when connected via the MIDI/USB cable?

    Thanks,
    Brett

    I'm connecting through the Mic also since I don't have a Line-In.

I have disconnected the MIDI in part of the cable. This seems to have made all the difference in sound quality. Do you know why that is?

    Thanks,

I don't know for certain unless I know more about your set up, but I would guess that you are running MME driver mode and using the MS GS Wavetable synth as your MIDI output. Try reconnecting your USB/MIDI and then go to INSERT>DXI SYNTH>EDIROL VSC. A window will pop up - select all options except "ALL OUTPUTS". another window will pop up, minimize that window for now. Go to the MIDI track that it created and ARM it. Now play your keyboard and see if it sounds a little better.

Thanks. I followed your suggestion and don't hear the really bad digitized sound anymore.

I'm using the Mic for my audio input and know that won't give me the best quality. I'd like to do what ever I can to improve the quality. The one place that things sound bad is when something is play loudly and fast. For example, a key is struck hard. In the Audio part, this seems to max out the audio and you get a tsshhhhh. Like a speaker getting to the point of blowing. I have the Mic volume turned down very low. Is there any thing I can do in the software to level out these extreme highs so it handles them better?

    Thanks,
    Brett

Do you have your windows audio turned down about halfway? Go to START>CONTROL PANEL>SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES then set your microphone volume to about 1/2. if it's already there, then you can try lowering it, but you might not be able to fix the problem without a better sound card - then you probably will also need a preamp for your mic, but that's another issue.
