    google for

    - Plug in,
    - 8 bit
    - game sounds
    - atari synth
    - commodore sounds

etc.; bet you'll find something. That kind of stuff is increasing in popularity recently.

ahh maybe a specialist area of mine sid station isn't made any more

    there is a new unit

    http://www.hardsid.com/

which is 4 sid chips in 1 unit. (you have to canibalise the 4 sid chips out of 4 c64's though..Noooooooo )

I am tempted to buy one of these though >

vst wise you could use things like.... quadra sid by re-fx , or unknown 64 .. it's a close replacement.. BUT the real c64 sid has a better sounds.

you can of course listen / download sid tunes, BUT don't be a loser like timbo and rip them off and then not pay the original composer (acid jazz evening) . Anyone who does that gets found out an outted for their blatant disrespect of using others talent.

there are another few things, that you could get... download "winvice"

    http://www.viceteam.org/

within them use something like "sid duzz it" by GRG or "ems" by cosine

    http://home.eunet.no/~ggallefo/sdi/index.html

    http://www.cosine.org.uk/products.php?4mat=c64&cat=tool

    or goat tracker

    http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=13367

the basic sounds on the machines are basic wave forms, sine / saw / triangle.. BUT twisted up by using arpegio etc

you could even get a "tracker" program and make sequences using that, and import them into a final tune..

if you just want a tune to use in a video like a youtube one, then you can use a sid tune off "high voltage" BUT credit the original artist.

Martin Galway , Jereon Tel, Rob Hubbard, Tim Follin all did excellent tunes, theres many more I could reel off , there many names.

heres a very good example of what can be done..

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQNT9Whg4r4&feature=related

4 sound channels... 3 using on board sound card... and the extra "digi" channel...4 bit sampling .. and ALL in 64k

if you want that crunchy sample sound, well just use one of the many bit crusher type effects.. loads of synths have them, including the cake ones..

    http://www.worldofspectrum.org/projectay/

is also nice.. tim follin's agent x tune , 5 channels. but it was only a 1 channel sound card..

    http://www.myspace.com/tempestchipmusic

has some nice examples and you can download his work... esp.. acid jazz evening.. and then compare it to Nelly's "do it" , acid jazz evening pre dates SIX years before..

I made this with Cakewalk Project 5 http://wdi-productions.com/I%20Love%20Coffee.html . I'm pretty sure a lot of it just uses the Dreamstation softsynth. Not quite the same sound, but video gamish sounding.

Wow Fog, those are some good links. One of them led to a "top 100" sid chip songs or something like that. I downloaded a player and some of the songs and there are some really interesting ones there. And if the player is actually doing a good emulation of the sid chip, then I just gotta say that that thing sounds beautifully trashy. The filtered sawtooth is such a cliche, but coming out of that thing... it was... whoa. I'm gonna have to look some more into that thing.

WDI I heard what you did, to make it more authentic the reverb doesn't help as most machines didn't have that effect, unless you copied the same notes to a 2nd channel and played with the volume, and delayed them playing a bit.

ok , these are free >

it's in japanese, if u scroll down, you see 3 gameboys.. thats also a vst, will have to try it later.

I've forgotten about this one, used to use it years ago >
    http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Campus/8645/sf2.html

fm dreams.. and a few more soundfonts. I used to use them a lot.

there are a few cheat ways to make a sound, novation dream station does it, if you flick between the arpegiator really quickly, although I don't own it.. there was an issue about chip music that CM mag did.

Rob Hubbard did a remake of his famous commando tune as one of the reason tunes, but the mixing was utter **** , the original is far better.

rosabelle was it a link to sid tunes, or a youtube video? if it's the top 100 games on youtube, that's only half the story. was nice to watch, but that's the more commercial tunes. Tim Follin's music for LED storm is nice, as is his ghouls and ghosts work.. As for more guitar sounds, "game over" by martin Galway is great. The tune out of BMX Kidz (by Jori Olkkonen ) is a trancey but cool. Jeron Tel from Maniacs of noise who did that turbo outrun tune, also did "supremacy" which I liked a lot also.

the sid player and the vst's etc.. does an "ok" job at emulation, but nothing has the exact sound of the real machine. The pins/chip do heat up a bit, and the sound changes slightly apparently. Even there, there were 2 versions of the chip, the filters differ slightly. MOS the people who were behind the SID went on to form ensoniq.

is interesting in the sense of they re-arranged the 3 channels tunes for a bigger band.

and people remix a lot of tunes >

It was the The High Voltage SID Collection (HVSC) Downloads Page . They have a monster 68 meg collection (of just sid files! not mp3s! How many songs is that?) but also a Top 100 collection which is what I downloaded.

Off of that page is a link to a Winamp plugin and instructions to play the sids an actual Commodore 64! Wonder if I could dig one of those up, to hear the real deal.

rosabelle.. an average sid tune is 11 or 12k .. so it's basically THOUSANDS, probably 10's of.. of everything ever released..and a few of the are by friends of mine. errm there sidplay also , but yer the win amp plugin works fine.

there's more than 1 tune per side also, normally if it's a game..

well you can pick them up on ebay, but the thing is unless you use a disk drive with the machine and a cable to hook the drive to the pc, then its a headache.. but there's other ways, like networking it to a pc via rj45.. costs money.. or even using an MMC interface..again that costs money..

this is quite funky also >

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnTh4e0b-ic

but I like the idea of the prophet 64 more as you can solder 2 chips in 1 machine = 6 channels and still keep the keyboard.. I was tempted to buy one and get the money back by making up some sample packs.
