Where is my external hard drive?

I just got 2 esata hard drives and tried to format them so they would show up under "my computer" next to the main drive. I was doing this from a windows 7 laptop. They show up under devices and printers without the format.

They were not formatting under the built in windows programming so I downloaded something from cnet and tried again. The computer was locking up and not finishing the format.

I plugged the hard drives into my XP desktop using the alternate USB option and used the same freeware to try the format. They formatted and showed up properly under "my computer" next to the main drive.

I plugged them back into the windows 7 laptop and they are still not there. What is going on here?

Power up the HDs... and restart the machine.
    Do the HDs now appear?

From computer management > disk management, it shows up as Disc 1. It says it is online and calls it Healthy (Logical Drive). It does not have the name I gave it during formatting.

Plugged it back into my XP desktop and there it is again listed as a hard drive next to c and d. It even has the name I gave it.

If it matters, I used Partition Wizard to format. http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3010-2094_4-10962200.html

It shouldn't matter though, since the drive shows up in the proper place with the proper name, in my XP desk top.

    Unbelievable

A couple of days and a few boot ups later, both external drives are showing up where they belong and with the proper names that were given.

I was just powering things up before calling the manufacturer for support, and there they were. I can even turn the external off and turn it back on without rebooting. It fixed itself. how weird

    The "magic" of computers

I've experienced the same, with a USB DVD though. Just "suddenly" there, as nothing happened.
