Where to install BFD2 - audio 'files' v audio 'tracks'

Hey Y'all. :) Can anyone help me decide where to install my BFD2 drum audio samples? Thanks! ................... Here's some background of what i have and where: When i installed X1, I just let Sonar installer wizard select all drives, folders, and directories. I assume therefor that Sonar put everything on my OS drive [C]. ................... However, all my Sonar audio *.wav 'files' are saved to, and retrieved from, a separate drive [E]. In the BFD instructions it suggests that i should install the BFD sample library to a drive that is: 'not used for audio tracks or other streamed libraries'. ................... I have my project audio folders that contain the *.wav 'files' in E Drive - but i don't know if that means X1 is using E drive for audio 'tracks' - according to BFDs definition of audio 'tracks'. ['tracks' v 'files'] ................... Are project audio *.wav 'files' the same thing as audio 'tracks' as referenced by BFD2 instructions? Or do audio 'tracks' for X1 refer to temporary tracks created by X1? In otehr words, does X1 use C drive for its audio 'tracks', even though i have my audio CWP 'files' all on E drive? ................... I do know that X1 is probably using C drive for 'other' streaming libraries, such as Dimension Pro, and the convolution reverbs, so i am inclined to install the BFD2 libraries on the E drive along with my audio *.wav 'files'. Does anyone know what's the best choice in this situation? ................... There is plenty of space on either drive. ................... Sorry about the long paragraph ----- i am having trouble getting it to format new paragraphs.

    The ideal way is this:

SONAR Installation - Installed on OS hard drive which only contains OS and program installs

Audio Files - Their own separate hard drive for audio files ONLY (I install the entire project in per project folders, all organised on this one folder thus everything related to one project is entirely in the single location - don't store the audio files separately, it's too messy)

Samples - Their own separate hard drive

Thus you should be using three hard drives (and not USB, SATA hard drives - USB3 or eSATA should work too, but I have not trailed them, I think one is better and writing and the other at reading)

The paragraph thing could be happening if you're using Firefox. Switch to Chrome - much better!

Im just using the 750GB drive on my laptop, and just 1x1TB drive on my desktop, with a second 1TB drive for backup,it depends how new your machines are.

I had to un-install the Western Digital Software for an external 1TB[USB 3 My book Essential for the laptop] drive as it was[after much testing, hassle.and surprise]slowing my whole laptop W7 64 Home P. down so badly it was amazing,as soon as I uninstalled the WD software, EVERYTHING went back to speedy,so it depends.

I'm having NO problems with everything on "C" on both machines, but I back up in a variety of ways regularly.

Chrome is definitely the fastest too,try pressing "Enter" at the end of a sentence.

Now isn't the best time to buy a hard drive, due to the floods in Thailand earlier this year, but prices haven't exactly skyrocketed and seem fairly stable at the moment. I think they might have peaked (IMO)

Whatever you do go for, DON'T go for any sort of "green" version, as they will spin down to save energy, usually just before you want to stream data from them.

I personally favour Western Digital models, but I'm sure other people have had great success with other brands.

You should be looknig at 1TB or higher in terms of capacity - my BFD samples including all the various expansion packs I've collected amount to well over 160Gb - and to that EWQLSO, Dimension Pro etc and it's easy to consume in excess of 500Gb

I recently installed a second SATA drive. I bought a WD black 7200 rpm, 64 cache drive. I use one drive for samples and X1 files and the other "C" drive for my OS and for program files.

Three drives as Matt mentioned is best, but I have been ok with two by putting all samples and audio data on one and all programs on the other. This is much better than one drive only.

Track counts, quantity and size of samples streamed all can contribute to the dreaded pops and audio dropouts. Having three drives greatly reduces the chances of this happening. Instead of your system looking for A and B in one place where A and B may be mixed up and more difficult to find,it can look in the A bin and the B bin. Since the bins are larger and have their own caches your system can breathe better and work faster.....I know this is a simple explanation but that is why having multiple drives are a requirement in big programs like BFD 2.

Using one drive in a computer sometimes can't get A and B data fast enough. 7200 rpm drives are best.

I have to admit being slightly confused by the multiple drive set up of dedicated DAW computers, and I NEVER have dropouts on either Laptop xps l502x-i7 2630qm sandy bridge[ASIO4all-super low RTLatency,as low as 2.4ms],or Desktop i7 2600k oc'ed to 4.5GHz[even with a USB 1.1 UA25-EX!-lowest latency 12.6ms].

I was told that since sandy bridge was quite a step up from 1st gen. i7,that it wasn't necessarry, but, easing the streaming thing makes sense.

The question is BFD2[stock] is 50GB of .wav's,and recorded audio are usually .wav's,so[embarrassing as it is] what are or what is the difference to "sample's"?

Do you mean rex files or MIDI files as samples?

Or is it just the fact they are on different drives that is the point?
Leading back to how do you quantify what's "audio" compared to what's "samples"?

With the NEW crash any time feature of [at least for me] X1D 64bit,a new can of worms of multiple drives, could be bit frightening, but I/WE need to know,THANKS-regards Bob.
