Where to stash images online?
I'd used ImageShack for years - for free - but now they've decided I need to pay for that service. I need an alternate place to stash images for linking to forum threads. And to replace my now-missing sig image since the forum software no longer allows uploading jpegs for signatures and instead wants an external link.

Hi, I don't know. I use my website for the images I need, but that's $3 bux per month or $4 ... don't even remember.

I don't really use that sort of thing much, but I think photobucket is still free *. * nothing is ever free.

I have a web server, too, but I stopped using it to host images for the forum after an incident wherein a web designer screwed up the file permissions, causing everybody here to be presented with a password prompt whenever they looked at one of my threads. That's when I switched to ImageShack. Photobucket looks like a good alternative. At least, they use the word "free" a lot on their site. I'll give it a try. Thanks, paulo.

I've been through them all and settled on http://imgur.com/ - you can drag your photos onto it, upload them and it will instantly give you a selection of links to the photo complete with automatic copy buttons to copy the links to the clipboard. My only complaint is that you don't get a link with the full image extension, which you'll need if you're linking to photos on this forum for example. It just gives you a URL with the name of the file. But that's no biggie, you can just add the extension yourself when you need it. It used to give you a link with the extension, but for some bizarre reason they took it out recently. There are also some Firefox and Chrome add-ons which add a right-click menu command to automatically upload web photos to Imgur. It works brilliantly.

Thanks, sharke. I'll check it out. Happily, my sig image has been restored now, via Photobucket. That formula has been a great ice-breaker over the years, motivating dozens of people to PM me asking what it is. I've met some great folks in the process. Second test, looking for candidates to replace my dishonestly out-of-date avatar, a photo from c. 1995. Here's the most recent selfie I could find...

photobucket has become an enormous pain to use (since like 3-4 years ago) and doesn't play nice with some forums... at least on my system. I don't post many images and when I do I just hotlink (bad man that I am) but I think sharke may have made the best recommendation. There is also tumblr but I'm not sure how that one works. Seems like there is a much more social media component to it as opposed to a simple image host but it does seem to work well. Also... lulz, QE.

I've had a free account at Photobucket for years, and still. It has worked very well for me. Easy to one-click copy the direct image and paste here using the Insert/Edit Image button. One-click-Ctl V = done deal. Of course there is always the resizing to move the image and other quirks due to the forums software issues- but no problems and no complaints about Photobucket. And...you reminded of this picker... Warren Haynes

You look like a younger version of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in a way. One of those, and that guy has his own recording studio. I use several places but they are not private in any sense and you have to copy the link, well all of that. http://en.directupload.net/ http://tinypic.com/ The first one the most, and I lost my password whatever else info to Photobucket and never came back to it, plus they limit the size, while the first link can I think hold a slightly bigger image. Something like that perhaps.

Nice pic Dave...I use photobucket for most of my needs and I haven't had any problems. I am leary of having images (or anything else) on a private server....in one case I was able too look at a lot more on a server than I should have been able to see...and I'm not a hacker...some private servers are way to easy to gain access to.

I use photobucket as well. However, if you have an open or public profile, people can see your pics. I believe you can make them private. I also have pics stored in dropbox, another free cloud storage site. I use DB a lot here recently for collabing and sending song tracks back and forth. It's pretty handy and I can access it quicker than photobucket which takes longer to load. I also can access DB on my smart phone with the app to check out the pics or the files people send.
