Which Control Surface really works without bugs for you in Sonar X3 Producer or Platinium?
Hello Guys! Wondering if you would like to share your experience about control surfaces in Sonar. It seems to be hard to have something working smoothly without bugs. Are you using one from witch you get satisfied? Thanks a lot for your posts!

I have my own way of using ACT, as described here. It works with just about anything that's Mackie compatible if you use the basic functions (fader, pan, record enable, solo, mute, etc.). It only gets a bit more challenging if you want to control other elements.

I have a Behringer BCF2000, that works well for what I use it for (mainly the faders and clients are wowed by the motorized faders). I have a Frontier Tranzport, a wireless controller, but the company no longer makes these. I also have a Korg Nanokontrol that works, but I had to set it as an ACT and program all the functions.

I have a Presonus Faderport - which frankly is terrible! Give TouchDAW a try if you have an android tablet - a budget solution that works really well for me:) There is a great setup guide for Sonar on Youtube. Awaiting the release of the Behringer X-Touch. It looks very promising.

There are a lot of people selling their vs-700c controllers these days ... You might want to see how cheap you could get one. This thing is capable of controlling almost anything in sonar ... And it has very few bugs (i am currently only aware of one issue but i can easily live without that feature) ... The closely tied integration is what makes me a really happy sonar user ...

You have to read the setup instructions really carefully and use the latest drivers. There are also MIDI parameters in SONAR that need to be enabled for it to work...maybe it's aftertouch or something like that.

Yep. Key Aftertouch and Channel Aftertouch both have to be enabled, or you're gonna have trouble.

Hi Tenfoot! I consider eventually the FaderPort. Can you jump without problem from one track to another? Can you jumps to the busses? Is it enough for making final mixes or would you like to have more faders? I bought TouchDaw but I can't make it work without bugs; installed it as described on youtube; some knobs don't work and sometimes it freezes Sonar and I have to restart the computer. One of the bug is that you cannot unmute track 1 after you mute it. Do you manage to make ti work? If yes how are you doing? Behringer's X-Touch seems to be interesting but will it be fully compatible with Sonar? ...and it'll only be out for the end of the year. I've looked at the VS 700 but they are too expensive in europe. Thanks a lot!

X-Touch will work throw the same module is Sonar as TouchDAW does. But TouchDAW by itself is not able to freeze something inside your computer by design. Check your rtpMIDI installation.

Sorry - I should have qualified my remarks about the Faderport. It does work - I just find the controls clunky. The transport controls are all click switches. Prior to using it I had the Yamaha 01x which has really nice soft switch transport controls, automated faders and a large jog shuttle. Unfortunately there are no 64bit drivers for it. The Faderport is also quirky if you load a project that was authored on a system with different midi device assignments. The project would freeze half way through loading, and the Faderport fader would stutter rapidly. Once you moved the fader, the project would continue to load, but the motorised fader would no longer function. I would have to correct the midi assignments, save the project, then remove and reinstall the Faderport under control surfaces in order for it to again utilise the motorised fader. It would seem the absent midi devices were causing a midi feedback loop on the Faderport channels. Not an issue if you always work on the one setup. I work on several so it was terribly annoying. I seem to recall that the driver installer was also clunky and convoluted. In my opinion not Presonus' finest hour. In answer to your question aixmusajo, the Faderport is really just a glorified transport control. I always found it easier to navigate using a mouse rather than the small clunky buttons. Like any controller, it was great to be able to rewind, play etc, even when sonar was not the active window (for example, working on lyrics or a wrapped vsti or audio effect) It seems to have plenty of fans here though, so perhaps I have just been spoilt by the Yamaha 01x. As to whether the Behringer will be compatible, only time will tell. I can tell you that I am using a Behringer X32 on my live rig. It has an embedded control surface function that works just fine with Sonar. Being a secondary function, however, it's layout is not ideal. If it's drivers and build quality are anything to go by though, the xtouch should be rock solid.

I totally recommend the Mackie Control. It has become the default industry standard and works without a problem. Many other CSs emulate it in order to work with various software. Where the MC, MC Pro and MC Pro Universal have no need to use an emulation.

My Mackie MCU has been acting up but I wouldn't necessarily blame SONAR even though I can get it sorted out with Studio One 2 and then open a SONAR project and it says it can't find the Mackie and blames it on a Windows out of memory issue.

Some folk find chunky buttons that go 'click' reassuring. Others prefer those little rubber things where you don't know if you've actually pressed it or not. I stopped using my BCF2000 because the faders were not touch sensitive and the noise was unbearable. The Faderport is "almost" silent and beautifully smooth. If the X-Touch works as well as a Faderport I'll change in an instant, but I'll want to try one first...

Agreed that the fader is quite smooth Karyn - but check out the faders on an x32 if you get a chance. I think you will be impressed. The faderport has been around for a few years now so it's not surprising that it's hardware is a bit dated. I guess it's horses for courses on those buttons. I don't need a loud click to know that I have pushed a button - I can tell when the transport moves

I don't know if this means anything but this was posted by Uli Behringer on Gear Slutz, Jan 4th. Dear all, "allow me to clarify. The X TOUCH controllers should be shipping in Q1. We're sorry it took longer than expected but we did a redesign to make sure they will also work with our new X AIR digital mixers. This will not only allow you to control these mixers with your iPad or Android tablet, but the X TOUCH will now provide full tactile and motor fader control. If you are at Namm, please drop by as we have working samples there. I hope this helps. Uli" Somebody find something different? Walt

My computer is all solid state, the transport doesn't actually move.. aixmusajo Hi Karyn! Do you manage to go from one track to another easily? Can you jump to the busses? Does it work with another control surface? Thanks!
It has < and > to move between tracks and the same as bank buttons to switch between tracks, busses and outputs. But I tend to have it sat next to my mouse. I use the transport and ride the fader for recording automation, but most everything else I use the mouse.

aixmusajo Your plug seems to be very good! But have a lot to learn about midi langage...:( Did you try TouchDaw?
I have TouchDAW, I am working to make a preset for it (effectively, this "preset" is going to be normal Mackie Control). I have not seen any freezes with is so far, either with My preset (not yet published, since it is incomplete for general use) nor with the original Mackie Control plug-in. I had several "disconnects", but that is related to my network.
