I vote for Mitch Ryder.  The Prince video wouldn't play for me.

I think I agree with Old55 with Mitch Ryder. The Prince version sucks. Sounds like a very ordinary covers band I played in 30 years ago. Cant believe someone so good put out such crap.

    I like the Prince version.

Great vocals. Nonchalant yet precise guitar work. Synths being used with out the introspection and the sense of self importance we would hear for the rest of the decade. Back in 1980 it was a great anecdote to the polished productions that were popular on classic rock stations. It's a great song, with a wonderful hooky lyric, and he wrote it and played just as he wished. A look at the personnel credits is an eye opener. ;-)

It's hard to imagine the Cyndi Lauper version seeming so self effacing and coyly humorous without Prince having set a precedent for how the song may be interpreted.

The Mitch Ryder version sounds pretty good, but to my ears it's the version that sounds like it was done by a cover band playing a frat house.

Ani Defranco sings it pretty nicely too.

It's just a super strong song.

    best regards,
    mike
