Which OS?
Buying a new high end workstation this week - specs have been 'tuned' thanks to all of the threads here. My only remaining question is: Which OS - should I do Vista64 or Vista32. The workstation will mostly be an HD video post with Sonar 7. My thread searches revealed some fairly old posts regarding Vista64 - are things stable now? -D

DonM, I have a dual boot of XP Pro and Vista 64-bit. Mainly, to get to only using Vista 64-bit. I haven't done that yet simply because of 64-bit support by third party plugins and audio performance. Some of my most useful plug-ins are a bit clunky under Vista 64-bit. However, that will probably be changing soon as more vendors start to embrace 64-bit. I did use Vista 32-bit for a while (not since service pack 1) so it may be a good option for you. Performance is better than 64-bit and I didn't have the plugin issues I've described with 64-bit. Since you are probably looking at Vista for the higher RAM support, the 32-bit version might be your best bet. But, you could consider the dual boot option just to see how things work in your environment with 64-bit. Best of luck, Tom

One more thing... Driver support under Vista should play a very important part for your decision. Make sure that the components you use have stable Vista drivers or you'll be disappointed.

Don I would not deal with XP 64 at all. It is not going to be well supported and CW wont support it either. Now I do recommend XP Pro 32 for your basic setup with Vista as a second choice on a dual boot system. If you get Vista ultimate it will come with both 32 and 64 bit versions. But so will the Home premium version it will come with the 32 bit version in the box only but the 64 bit version can be ordered. What I think is the best of both worlds is a mobile rack for quickly changing out the system HD. One for XP one for Vista. This gives the best possible freedom and ease of use with the setup for each on separate HDs. That is the way I am doing it. Or will be doing it. I do have the mobile rack and I will get another for changing out the system HD. With a 500 GB SATA HD going for less then $100 it is a no brainer to approach it this way.

You guys are the best. Now for my dilema. 70% of this system will be for HD video editing. I just read dozens of posts over at Sony's forum where users are running V64 with Vegas 8 - which is currently unsupported - with NO problems! Vegas will be released as a full 64 bit app I think I may bite the V64 bit... -D

Do both OSs. Heck and throw in Linux too. Think of it as it was back when with floppy disks. Change the disk and change the OS. SATA 2 is hot swappable.

I´ve been running XP x64 since it came out - IMO it´s just as mature as XP 32, the only downside so far, for me, has been the lack of 64-bit plugins & Bitbridge-problems. i.e. another + for XP ( & maybe x64 ).
