Which bands have released a bit of a duffer for their first album?

Even though they've gone on to produce some pretty good stuff since that disappointing debut...
  • Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla
  • Saxon - Saxon
Thinking about it, these two albums were guilty of some pretty piss-poor artwork too:

    Already mentioned this in the other thread, but one of my favourite bands, Del Amitri, released a horrible debut album, where they decided not to play any chords, just single line guitar parts. It's unlistenable tripe. Then they toured the US and came back with Waking Hours, with songs like this gem;

Couldn't disagree more. The first album is the gem. Everything after that is just a tiresome dirge of middle of the road rock.

For me, number one example with nothing else even close close would be Radiohead (first album Pablo Honey, everything since good to superb).  I read somewhere that Thom Yorke would like to disown that first effort.

A reasonable alternative would be Muse (first album Showbiz, second Orgins of Symmetry, then a string of very, very solid offerings).

Agreed about Radiohead, though I did loose interest after Amnesiac.

Took me forever to take Muse seriously after I first heard them - whatever that first song was, it made me think of them as a Radiohead rip off.

Took my wife to turn me onto them - the last few albums were totally brilliant. I still have issues w/ the way the vocal is mixed. Constantly sounds over-the-top. But he is a brilliant rock singer. Saw them live in 2010 and they blew me away.

These were pretty forgettable, without a hint of the huge influence they would have in the decades that followed:

You realize that this thread could get millions of replies because of the vast majority of bands that have put out a duffer for their first album (and, maybe, never made another or continued to put out losers)...

Supertramp's first two efforts didn't exactly set the world on fire..good job record companies back then were prepared to give bands a little time to develop, 'cos their next one was 'Crime of the Century'.

    Harsh ...

I disagree. I'm not sure that you can sit here and say that you were any better when you were 18/19 and trying to put something together. Both albums show an incredible amount of promise, though it can also be said that "promise" is a futile word and not something you need/want to live with ... it's hard enough to live it as it is day by day, specially when armchairs are so handy!

I could say that Gong's 1st album was weird and not very good by comparison to later work, or that Soft Machine with Kevin Ayers was terribly over rated ... but then, you would be missing out on a couple of things that helped define a whole scene in London that ended up being christened as "progressive" and still lives to this day!

Far be it from me to state that anyone had an over blown album and it was really sad, and pathetic, and I tend to not say it, because everyone has a right to do it ... but there are some things that are better developed than the others.

The one thing I would say about both those albums, is that while the promise was there, the premise, wasn't!

'My Bonnie' by Tony Sheridan and The Beatles was..hmm. My sister had that LP, and had I known the acronym 'WTF? ' when I was 10, I would certainly have had it above my head in a thought bubble.

I had a copy of the Beatles set of concerts in Hamburg for a long time, and this was pretty much even before they became famous ... and there are many expressions and lyrics sung in there that show up later ... rita is one of them ... and a different, if funny one, there is one of the Christmas Shows where they start singing "Besame Mucho" and immediately George says ... copyrights copyrights ... and they stop singing it. I'm guessing as they hit the BIGGER time, that they were told by Brian Epstein, to stop singing anything that was not theirs.

From what I read, the Beatles had to stay on stage and perform for hours in Hamburg - something they really weren't ready for -  and they didn't have the repertoire to play for so long, so they basically recycled anything they could - including odd bits like the Sheik or Besame Mucho...

Also, McCartney always had a strong penchant for old musicals and all that stuff.

    Hi,

I still say ... NONE ... to the question on top ... we all had to crawl on our knees and went crying to mommy when this or that happened. So some bands were not as good as the others, and the Beatles first album is not as good as their last ... but the first album is easy and perfect for kids and people to learn music with ... simple and straight forward, which most "first albums" usually were. AND still ARE!
