I would choose America, because I have the feeling it would BE very versatile musically and there are some of my favorite bands.

America is the best place to live ... but not the best place for the arts.

You can't discuss arts with musicians because they take it personally, but you can discuss the arts with a writer and a painter, and it adds to the conversation. Europe is way better than America when it comes to music, now that America is owned and operated by the corporate world, and no one can do anything different, and NY is about the rudeness and LA about the Channel and the clothing!

All in all, Europe for music and theater and film ... and America to live!

Music in America is a joke ... too much of it is the same thing ... and when one says something, hoping to add more to it, it's like talking to the devil ... no intellectual ability whatsoever, sometimes. That excludes some folks in the CH, of course, who are far above and beyond these ideas!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I make it a point never to announce in advance where I'm going. There's no point in warning them ahead of time.

When I step out of my front door and turn my head to the right, this is what I see:

I've lived and worked all over the world, I've flown millions of miles, I went years spending more than 200 nights/year in hotel rooms. I love many of the places I've been fortunate enough to visit. Korea? Fabulous. Southeast Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur)? Fascinating. Australia? I definitely could live there. Europe? I like Spain the best (reminds me of Arizona, but with better food and wine). Stockholm was a blast. The closest I got to Finland was a girlfriend (first name: Aino; last name: never could spell it). South America? Venezuela was fun. Brazil was dangerous. But my Spanish is poor and I have no Portuguese. So where?

Like Bapu...exactly where I'm at. I picked Flagstaff as my final destination. I was born on Route 66 in 1951. I plan to die on Route 66, I just hope it's quite some time from now.

Flagstaff has almost the perfect temperature range (it does get windy, though!), a vibrant music scene, 7 local brewers making some of the best beer I've tasted anywhere in the world, the Grand Canyon, the largest Ponderosa pine forest in the world. By car: 6 hours from Los Angeles, 2 hours from Phoenix, 4 hours from Tucson, 7 hours from Santa Fe, 6 hours from Durango, 12 hours from Denver, 9 hours from Telluride, 3 hours from Las Vegas. I could go on.

Hi,

We're here in the Columbia River Gorge ... a quick boat ride for a half hour and one of the prettiest places ever ... ask Craig! And Multnomah Falls is cool, too!

I took this picture from the top deck right outside of my bedroom at the house I used to own.

And a daytime shot from the same deck.  The mountain is Mt. Hood.  Directly to the left 40+ miles is Mt. St. Helens (the famous volcano) and, at 45 degrees (in between the two other mountains) is Mt. Adams.

Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Okay. Countries are big. They have lots of people. People are different from each other. Differences are things that are not the same. That is good.

Not all musicians in a country are the same. They are different because they are people. They make the music they want to make, even if it is not the same. That is good.

Some people are unhappy if they can't control other musician's thoughts. They do not understand that musicians are people. They are different from each other because they are people. They make the music they want to make, even if it is not what someone wants to hear. That is good. If that makes someone unhappy, they should probably get over it.

Yeah, it's really only New Orleans jazz, bluegrass, Americana, ragtime, hip-hop, barbershop, salsa, Creole, Hawaiian, Cajun, Appalachian Folk, techno, Western swing, rockabilly, gangsta rap, house, alt country, soul, metal, EDM,  reggaeton, corrido, Afro-Cuban jazz, disco and pop.

That's all it is.

"Country" is too broad a category I think. I live in one of the largest conurbations in England other than London and like it, but there's no way I'd want to live in London. No offence to Londoners, and I find the place great for a few days, but it's not somewhere I'd want to live.

Outside England, I'd go for some parts of France, Spain, Portugal... New Zealand's nice and we know a few people who moved there...

Mrs TLW would probably add Finland to the list. Her job's taken her to Helsinki a few times and she really likes the place.

I have a friend from Slovakia, that sounds good. It's landlocked, so proper seasons, cool spring,  blazing hot summer, cool autumn, freezing winter. These last few years we've had more or less the same weather all year round, mild, grey and windy...much like myself...

America is my first choice.

North, Middle or South America?  Sorry, I had to.
Anyway, I'm too stiff socially to live anywhere amidst the latin/south European liveliness, even though it might do good for me. I don't like superlatives, continuous talking and people who can't spend a couple of days alone in silence.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Some people are unhappy if they can't control other musician's thoughts. They do not understand that musicians are people. They are different from each other because they are people. They make the music they want to make, even if it is not what someone wants to hear. That is good. If that makes someone unhappy, they should probably get over it.

My line actually came from a musician, whose book I am reading right now!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Re: Which country to move to? 2016/01/27 13:53:56 (permalink)
I'm happy right here in  North America. I've been to  other countries and each time it feels good to get back here. I live in the north east part of the country..Lancaster County Pennsylvania. I has a great combination of small mountains and scenery. Some of the most fertile land on earth. The seasons here change a lot. Right now we're buried under 26" of snow. It took me a day to get it all cleared away. This is the coldest it gets all year. Things gradually get warmer now. I could actually go off fossil fuel and use the heat pump yesterday since it was 34F during the day. This year we had 10F at night in January for a few days. In another two months the temps are usually much much higher. We usually get enough of everything, enough rain, enough sun, enough cold.

While I live in a country setting I can be in any one of the large cities in a short time. Philadelphia, New York, Washington DC, Baltimore are all short hops from my house...and you can actually fit two large cars going opposite directions on the road together. Not like some of those cow paths in other countries. I can be at the eastern shore in two hours. Anything I want to buy is less than a half hour away.

The music- I think we are abundant with talent here, talent just isn't being promoted. The only music being promoted is garbage ( mostly) I say that as an old guy. All the big acts visit this area . I play in irish sessions and I have my pick of three within a 30 mile radius of me. There's good music everywhere. There's also bad music everywhere.

As of this writing I am free to do  anything I want to do and not need to worry about some crazy rules. In the cities here it is more strict. This may all change.

I think Germany , Norway, and certain places in Europe are beautiful, but we also have a large variety of places here in America. Mountains are beautiful but you have to drive through them and you can't grow anything on them. I guess everything has good and bad :)

I admit I'm probably biased since I've lived here all my life. Lots of places look great for the first week or two, after that......you might see through the makeup.
