Which delay do you use?

I was going to setup a few sends for a template and realized I've never bought a delay. Do you use Sonitus, or do you have another favorite? I've got a demo of Valhalla's Ubermod. Ik's new tape delay may be nice. Any thoughts?

I have a bunch of delays but the one I keep going back to again and again is Waves H-Delay. I know the SuperTap is more versatile but with H-Delay I just seem to be able to dial in the sound I want very quickly, and it always sounds great.

Hey Thanks for the quick input! Fab Filter would be nice, but for that price I could probably buy the other 3 mentioned. I'll probably get Ubermod at some point, it seems pretty cool, but I don't know if it would be that go to generic delay. It seems pretty insane...in a good way (I'm very happy with my ValhallaVintageVerb purchase). I don't know if I want to go down the Waves road either. I got One knob louder for free awhile back and the whole process was a pain. I guess I need to play around with a few, so I'll have a better idea of what I'm even looking for.

Let me "echo" the praise for the Waves H-delay. If you have an account at jrrshop.com, you can get it right now for about $42. Don't delay! :-)

The H-delay does look nice and simple. I guess my waves cloud thingy is setup now after the one knob nightmare. My inner funkiness is leaning ubermod, but I'll check with audiodeluxe (I don't have a jrr shop account) and see how much H-delay is.

I created an account at jrrshop. That waves h-delay does look sweet for $42. Thanks for the input! Now I'll go an agonize over it for awhile.

I use the PSP tape echo for my lead guitar tracks. Excellent delay, very analog sounding!

    Peace!

I've been demoing delays all day. So far, they've all been pretty great. For guitar Iks new echoplex is really nice. I'll probably get that in due time. Valhallas ubermod is awesome, but I guess it doesn't sync to host. I was trying to make a template with delay as an effect send. It needs to sync with host. Valhalla may be worth the trouble as much fun as it is. Fab Filter is one I guess I'll download and try. I hate to spend that much money for one plugin though. Their gui is sexy, but I don't think their plugins sound better than everyone else. They have form and function...the best I've seen. I'm not in a hurry. I have several tools to do the job for now. I've got to say Variety of sounds Nasty DLA sounds pretty good to. I'm about to dig out that manual and see if it can sync to host. I had a nice tape delay going with it earlier.

Re: Which delay do you use? 2013/06/16 01:21:12 (permalink)
For straight delays, I don't really care. Otherwise I generally just reach for one of my UAD card delays first.

But I also like to have a delay set up in an "external" feedback loop so that other processors can be inserted inside the feedback loop. Since Sonar (sadly) doesn't allow you to create such feedback loops by itself, this means I either use NI's (sadly discontinued) Kore2 or create a loop using HW.

Much fun can be had by inserting filters, saturators, distortion, etc. inside a delay loop to progressively mutate the delays. On the more mundane side, EQ and chorus work nice too.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.
