Which format for storing audio?

Which format is better?

1. A seperate hard drive to store all the audio files?

2. Use that drive to store projects also in the Per Project Audio Folder format.

I currently use it for to store just the audio data. And my projects and other files on a diff hard drive.

Software: Sonar 8.5PE/ Reason 4

Greater redundancy is, of course, better (safer). But if you go with #2 and do regular backups, you'll be fine.

Drives are cheap just remember they can also fail. I'd add to the mixture when the project is complete make a DVD or Blu-ray backup and store this off site.

Why? If you keep your audio and project files together using the "Use Per Project Audio Folders" option making backups is so much simpler. Why would you want to separate the two? "Greater redundancy", as stated by jinga8 (and i mean no disrespect to him or his opinions), is just a fancy phrase for "backup".

The illustration below shows the folder structure of what happens with one external drive...

If you save your project to an external drive using the "Use Per Project..." folder option. You will have a project folder that contains all the SONAR data related to the project; there will also be a sub-folder that contains all of the audio .wav files that are associated with the project. It's really pretty simple if you stop to think about it. Now, if you decide to save (backup) the project folder, all of the audio data will be saved with it. Much easier than trying to track down audio files on a different HD.

    +1 papa2004

Definetly use the Per Project Audio Folders. It makes organization 100% easier. Prior to Sonar 4 they didn't have this option. I've been using Cakewalk Since Pro-Audio9 and it took me like a month to convert all the old projects into Per Project Audio Folders. So I would start using it right away. It really is daunting trying to manage your projects when all the audio is mixed together in one folder. Try to keep a some kind of organization structure similar to how iTunes manages your music...Group/Album/Song. That way when you want to back up your current projects all you have to do is copy the folder to your backup drive. Sonar uses a relative path scheme to find the audio files. So in other words, you will be able to open the project from any location you copy the project to.

Yep, store project files and audio on one drive. Back that up to an external drive. And then archive data on DVD.
