Which hard-drive to store samples on?

Hi all,

A bit of advice please:

I am using Sonar 8 producer on a laptop.  The laptop has a small hard-drive - only 80GB.  I have lots of software requiring samples - such as garrison personal orchestra, stylus rmx and a few others.  I have a USB portable hard-drive (500gb) used for back-up of projects once I've completed them.

My question is - should I aim to store the samples / audio files from my programs like GPO and Stylus on the portable hard-drive (as the storage is so much larger, and my smaple library is only going to expand over time) or is this going to be too slow, since the connection is via USB?

THanks,
Adrian

it's not ideal via usb.. also depends on the program IF it uses streaming OR loads direct into memory.

I had a 80gb drive in a laptop.. upped it to errm 160 or 250..  but both things you mention eat hard drives for breakfast.

I use lightweight libraries on my laptop.. and then on my main none laptop rig change things later.

May be it is possible for external 500gb hard disk. If possible then you can upgrade your internal hard drive. And also you can scan your computer with latest antivirus may be it is virus problem also.

I only have a 80 GB HD on my laptop too.
I bought a Glyph external HD to store all my files on. The only thing on my laptops HD are the programs themselves, all the libraries, samples, GOG files and recorded stuff gets saved directly to the Glyph.
I have never once had issues with streaming files directly from it.

You want to get a HD with a 7200 RPM drive (or faster). I also read that the transfer rate should be no higher then .08 ms or something but never found those specs while shopping for one.
My guy at Sweetwater informed me that THESE HERE were below that.

Glyph also says that if their HD's fail they will recover all hey can off the HD for free.

I have only 160GB hard disk. I always store is the sample data in D:/ drive. My PC hard disk are 4 parts divided. C, D, E, or F. I always store a sample data in the D:/ drive. I have never once had issues with streaming files directly from it.

I have a 320GB drive on my laptop.... but it's about half full. So I bought a 1TB external USB drive. I custom install my synths... the application goes on the lappy's drive and the libraries (which are huge) all go on the external. So far, the synths and libraries are all the kind that load to memory..... EWQL, Kontakt, Jamstix, and others.... so once it loads up, the playback is flawless.

For $89 this is your best bet. Spins at 7200 rpm and includes the enclosure. Tiger Direct a.k.a. CompUSA.
