Which is better? WDM or ASIO??

Is the latency lower with ASIO, or is WDM is just all around better performance?

    Dave

    More Seriously

It all depends on the Audio Interface and your PC

A post with you system specs, asking about a specific card's wdm, mme and asio drivers

    Celeron 2.6
    512 in RAM

    Using the onboard audio.

Does support WDM but not WDM/ KS.

Both ASIO and WDM come up in Sonar.

Right now, Looks like ASIO is the way to good.

    Correction:

    My system does support WDM/KS.

Just download the ASIO4ALL and going to give it a try.

    Thanks!

That's the way to do it with sound drivers, it's different on every PC/sound card combination.

With me, it depends on the app. SONAR on my DAW likes WDM better. On the other hand, to get some of the features of Sound Forge 8.0 to work, I have to us asio.

...and it's the other way around for me .

By the way, asio4all is meant to provide asio driver level support for applications (like cubase, nuendo) that cannot utilize a wdm driver. It is dependant on wdm- and will **ALWAYS** go through wdm- meaning, if you have the choice of wdm or asio4all in Sonar, you will likely have better performance with wdm. Why deal with a 'middleman'?

I have a (now ageing) Toshiba laptop with WHQL certified WDM/KS support in the onboard sound drivers.

It amuses me no end that SONAR refuses to work with the WDM drivers and I must use ASIO4ALL to make it work.

    However, I am easily amused.

Latency is down from 10ms to 7ms.

Probably can do better. I'll see how close I can get when I it's time too. Right now, playback feels great.

Take a look at Scott Reams Sonar 3 test. It seems to me they are about the same as far as latency. Thats what I have found when I did a bunch of testing, also.

On certain machines one might be more stable than the other, depending on the sound card.

I like WDM a little better becuase it allows you to change latency inside Sonar by adjusting the slider. As the project gets near mixdown I tend to increase latency. ASIO requires you go out to the device panel for the soundcard and change the sample size (at least on my machines).

    Depends on the application.

I'm running wit KX project drivers (www.kxproject.com)

    ASIO - 2.66ms
    WDM - 10ms

When mixing I use WDM and in composing I use ASIO.

Depending on the hardware I can get down to 1.5ms with both WDM and ASIO. Some hardware has better ASIO support and some have better WDM support. Some have good drivers for both. All things being equal I prefer WDM simply becasue it is built into the architecture of Windows and not an extra layer. Also, I have very occasionally had issues in teh past with ASIO drivers causing a BSOD under certain circumstances, And as others have pointed out, you can adjust WDM latency right from within SONAR. Furthermore WDM lets you use multiple devices.
