Which mic should i get?

Hey all, quick question. Which one of these two mic's should I get for use with vocals/acoustic/possibly mic'd amp...
MXL 990:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXL-MXL-990-Condenser-Microphone-with-Shockmount?sku=273156

or
MXL 909
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXL-MXL-909-Vocal-Condenser-Microphone?sku=273100

The reason I ask is because the 909 seems to claim its better suited for vocals and retails higher, but I know nothing about the technical specs and their meanings.
I dont know much of anything about mics and this'll be my first decent one. thanks for help

I used the 990 for a couple of years... bought it to be impressive looking to young punk rockers, and found out it was a great sounding mic for almost no money. I don't have any experience with the 909, but I can tell you that the 990 is a great female vocal mic, pretty solid on acoustic guitar (placement is an issue... but once you get it right, it's pretty darn cool!), and very useable on drum overheads as well.

There are better mics out there... but most of them cost more money. You might want to look at the Audio Technica 2020 - it's getting rave reviews from everyone who tries it.

I've had a bunch of MXL mics and liked all of them, even the cheap V57M is a great mic. My 990 had a bit of "honk" to it but that may be a good thing for some applications.. and I tend to be a bit picky about mics. My new favorites in the low price range are the Studio Projects B1 and the MXL V12. If you shop for the B1 I would get the new style they just updated it. I just got one for $119 with the shock mount and case. The V12 I got off e-bay, there is no information on the MXL site about it, it may have only been available in europe. Anyway, I paid $169 on e-bay and I think it's the best mic for my vocals. It's not as open and airy as the AKG solid tube but it just has a better tone.

We've had four 990's in since we purchased the first one. The original sounded good, the second sounded TERRIBLE, the 3rd and 4th sounded as good as the first one. The 991 sounds wretchedly bad... I can't thin of anything I'd ever want to record with it.

I've used the V69 Mogami once... a friend loaned it to me, and I was fairly impressed with it. Sounded pretty darn good.

I have a chance to get a B2 for $75... thinking seriously about it.

I know mxl has good reputation for the price, but as far as the specs are for each of the two mic's, does the 909 seem too directed primarily for vocals?
The reason I ask is because their both on sale for the same price, and I'd rather get the 909 if its just a slighty better quality than the 990.

Also I have heard others mention the audio-t 2020, but between 60 and 100 dollars, i choose 60 (mxl's) since Im a poor college student and just a beginner.

Lots of folks don't realize that the B1 (and B3) are excellent acoustic guitar mics... (also sound pretty decent on electric guitar cab).

The B series has a thinner diaphram... so it responds quickly to transients.
IOW, You get the accuracy/articulation of a small diaphragm mic... with a little more 'size' (due to the large diaphragm)

I was able to hear the B1 on a blind mic shootout (one of my top two picks !) but havn't use one yet, I just ordered the new version can't wait to try it. Of all the mics in the shootout including Neumann, AKG, etc the Studio Projects B1 and the Shure KSM-44 were the two I picked out as sounding the best to me. I was shocked when I got to the end and saw the brands and models and how I scored them. I was sure the KSM-44 was a Neumann of some kind during the listening but I was wrong. I coudn't guess what the B1 was I just knew I liked the sound of it.

Frank - thanks for that info on the B-1, that's really good to know if you liked it that much over those others without knowing what it was.

have you ever used an AT2020? they are obviously pretty popular in the low end mics and I was just wondering if you had used one if you could compare it with what you think about the B-1.

No, it's odd but of all the mics I've ever used I have never used an AT condensor mic. I used to have their kick drum mic but for some reason have never tried their condensors.

That would have been a good comparison, tho, since they're so close in price and both seem to be very popular. thanks anyway!

No, that's why I was asking, I am about to buy another condensor for a project coming up and I was trying to decide between the AT2020 and the B-1!

And I really wouldn't mind working with you in person at all, but I'm afraid my "collection" would come up WAY short!!!! Instead of a "shootout - it'd be more like a "massacre"!!! I'd be on the ground holding my ONE cheap-o M-audio condensor mic!!!!

I didn't mean that kind of shoot out LOL ! My collection is not anywhere near what it once was but I have some you might want to hear. We could make recordings with them to use to compare sound. This is something I have not had time to do and it would be a good excuse for me to get out of the house. Let me know if you have some time to work on it. I should have the B1 and a MXL 190 in the next few days, I've been on a buying spree lately.

OK, cool! Hmmm....the next few days might be a little hard for me, tho.

Tomorrow I am off from work all day long and I could do it pretty much any time tomorrow during the day and maybe in the evening, too, after that, however, I'm going to be busy all day Saturday being a temporary "roadie" for Sonic Flood, then Sunday afternoon I'm flying to Boston for the week!

let's take this conversation off-line...send me an email:

    Frank....

For cheap(inexpensive) mics I've been farely impressed with the ADK's.

I picked up a A-51 TypeV for $50.00(used) and it has pretty much replaced my Rode NT-2 which was $450.00 in its day.

Have you ever used one and whats your opinion?

Kyle, getting comparisons between lower priced gear is pretty well impossible. Anyone who has bought one of these is not going to buy another low priced item, they are going to trade up. I have a 990 and have been very happy with it for female vox (my singer has a sweet cute voice) and I think it stands up to tests against much more expensive mics that I've tested but not other MXLs.

I'm not sure what I would upgrade to. maybe a Rode NT-1a because they are Aussie Aussie Aussie.

No, I have not used any ADK's (yet ) but I'm having a blast trying others. I just got the new Studio Projects B1 the shock mount is very strange and I don't like it but the mic sounds very good. My new favorite is the MXL V12 I got off e-bay.. man there is no siblince problem with that mic on vocals it's just smooth as silk. I'd pick that over my AKG Solid Tube now. And that's saying a lot becuase the Solid Tube as been my go-to mic for many years.

The low price makers are not only catching up they are making mics that work in the digital word, it's about time. I'm sick and tired of mics that were designed for analog tape with the over bright high end, that sucks.
