I'd opt for a warmer mix sound, but I LOVE the arrangement.  The plastic sounding kick drum sounds especially out of place in this style of music.  I think a dull thud type of kick would fit better.

    Merry Christmas!

LOL @ bottle cap! Loved this Scotty! Reminds me of the great Christmas's I had with my mom...she loved singing this song to me. Great job on this....man those fiddles sound sweet. The little downward run in the melody section was awesome! Love the guitar sounds on this and the vocal is perfect! Drums on a tune like this (in my opinion) are subjective as most of the older stuff in this genre, the drums were sort of there filling things in without being too dominant. The end was great too! Awesome job! :)

Nicely done Scotty. Feel very homey and welcoming. This is entirely a matter of taste, but (don't kill me, Danny, please ) I would go a tad wetter on the lead vox. Enjoying the following tune too. Ha! Now this is fun. (I wish soundcloud would tell us what is playing next, as I have no idea what this tune is called).

    Robby,
Thank you! I appreciate you saying that.

    Daryl1968,
Thanks! I even surprised myself with some of the guitar work. LOL

    Danny,
Thank you so much! I'm glad it struck a chord with you. The guitar is a Taylor 610 maple that rings out loud and clear so it records well with very little tweaking if any. Buffer wanted to end it in the traditional manner but I convinced him to do a modulative ending. Glad you liked that too. The fiddles were a MIDI program that I dug out of the closet.......KIDDING! I'm happy to hear that they sounded good to you. As for the drums...I think I was going for a modern country sound but the rest was more old fashioned so I ended up with a mismatch. The song is a track from a seven song album that we put together for charity and the album has made lots of money for a local food shelf. That in itself makes me very happy. Thanks again for your time and kind words, bro!

    Foxwolfen,
Thank you very much! I appreciate your suggestion, however it's already in circulation on an album so a little too late for tweaks now. I couldn't tell you what tune you heard afterward, as it changes with every click of the link.

ok I have to say it; The glued together harmony of the string band is so freaking good... it makes me dreamy.

Scotty: LOL with the midi stuff! I just spit coffee all over! Hahahahahahaha! Yeah that Taylor is sick sounding...sick in a good way. :) Yeah drums for this sort of stuff will always be subjective I feel. When I listen back to some of the older music, it almost sounds like they used their hands or brushes more than a stick attack....so I'm cool either way with that. I was just blown away by the quality, performances and production on this. Then again, you always outdo yourself...so you've spoiled us. :)

Shad: you won't get a beating from me....there's never enough reverb on things for me! LOL!! That's one of my old 80's habits that I've been trying to get out of for years. But just about everything I hear can use a bit more verb. Hahahahaha! One thing I have learned about that though, the better the reverb, the more you hear it yet it's not over-dominant. I've been using the EMT 250 from UAD, really good impulses and the Lexicon stuff. They are so lush and transparent, you can use them a bit more and they don't sound like over-kill. As long as you keep decay tails to a minimum, they really do a nice job.

    excellent Scotty!  fantastic version!

personal preference, I'd prefer a little more dynamics in the mix - it's tighter than a brick of...well...you know!!!

fiddles are just awesome in this!  vocals are brilliant!  mix is well balanced - just not so much dern compression!

    Chuck,
Thank you! Glad it gels right.

    Beagle,
Thank you very much! I used a very soft comp on this so I guess we didn't perform it with enough dynamics...?

When you mentioned it was already on the album, it occurred to me that I think I might have said exactly the same thing before. I had a odd case of Deja Vu when I posted. If so, well... at least I am consistent .
