Not expanding to Expanded either...

I figure I'll stay away from the latest and the greatest for a while and just be happy with what I have.

I don't like to pay for proprietary software just to mix in the proprietary licensed daw I've been using since 3. I didn't expand & for the first after all these years I just purchased new daw software.

I'm skipping Expanded. I will upgrade as soon as the Browser is developed much further, the Console view is revamped, the clips pane has a real grid that shows current snap settings, comping workflow is improved, Audiosnap is improved, or if V-Vocal is improved before I purchase Melodyne

+1

There are still bugs in X1 that have been carried over from the last 2 or 3 versions of SONAR !!  I know the work arounds after all these years, but really, just fix 'em.

I have expanded to Reaper and may expand to Studio 1 also.  I have purchased every CW upgrade since DOS V2, but after the X1 roll out, I am less than impressed.  I will be keeping my money in my pocket for all future CW upgrades until I can test a working DEMO that shows CW has regained it's focus and delivers on it's advertised features.

If past history is a yardstick of whats to come, these EXPANDED features will be rolled into a future update for free.

So not now...........................maybe later................maybe.

I only "suggested" you do it.  The fact that I had a riding crop in my hand should've made no difference at all.

I downgraded to X1 when it came out to replace 8.5. I've spent the intervening time bug-hunting in X1 and have gone back to 8.5.3 which works reasonably well.

I've recently gone down the Studio One v2 path - looks pretty wonderful. Think I'll be jumping off the good ship Cakewalk sooner rather than later.

To my way of thinking Expanded was a marketing gimmick to allow Cakewalk to get extra revenue from the installed base by allowing third party vendors to sell stuff into the closed "ProChannel" shop. I found this direction, (and X1 generally), incredibly appalling. Rather than focusing on audio manipulation enhancements, it is turning more and more into a pro-sumer loop toy.

Guess I feel like I've grown out of it...

I'm definitely on the fence as well and a little skeptical of the path Cakewalk seems to be headed down.  I didn't upgrade as I'm waiting to see if Cakewalk makes some SERIOUS progress w/ X2 (or whatever it will be called) before I continue to shell out money.  I've sworn by Cakewalk since the Pro Audio days but if the next version is not a major leap forward, for the first time, I'll definitely be moving on to other solutions.  There's just too many other quality options out there to settle nowadays.

Re:Who Here Didn't Upgrade to Expanded? 2011/10/21 04:58:18 (permalink)
I don't even own X1, so I certainly didn't get Expander, but I was thinking about getting it all last week. However, now that S1 2.0 is out I think I will give that one a try.

I never really liked that a lot of the stuff that comes with Sonar was never really finished, as if quantity is more important then quality. Sonar can do a lot, but nothing is really perfect. Now I won't say S1 is perfect (just look at their forum), but at least it seems to be a lean machine that does what it should do.

I do appreciate that CW tried to do something new with X1, but the bad reports kept me from getting it and even after the release of X1c I don't trust it... And now suddenly they released Expanded, while a lot of people are still having problems with X1 itself...? Why don't they sort out all problems first and add stuff (in free upgrades) that people really want? Now you get yet another bunch of plugins that cost almost as much as a complete upgrade to X1. Releasing a new version every year was a bit too much (obviously) but this new way of releasing new versions NOT as new versions but as some sort of addon payware upgrade is very confusing imho. If I buy a new version of a DAW I'd like to buy the latest version But when I buy X1 now, I won't have the latest version unless I buy some more addons...? I think that the release of Expanded was the opposite of an incentive to get X1 after all. I don't like all those possible versions and addons and Suites and Elite packs and whatnot. It's getting way too compliceted and messy.

Well I didn't even know it was available.

No email nothing.Having said that I would not upgrade anyway as I don't use
the Pro Channel either.

Wonder what the next incarnation is going to be now that a certain
DAW has just released it's latest version?

Another +1.

I've reverted back to Reaper and I appreciate it even more now.
I mostly just use X1 if I need to do some time stretching of an audio file as I really like the Izotope Radius algorithms.

I'll keep my eye on future Sonar updates though.

Totally agree with you that the Radius algorithms are exceptional. I like them more than the Elastique stuff in Reaper/Studio One.

I'd pay Izotope to have them available in an alternate platform...

No way am I paying to upgrade to Producer, then paying again to get Expanded, just to get drag and replace for plugins. The rest is of no interest and that particular feature should have been in X1 from the start,.

FWIW I have always used the Producer versions of Sonar. Now when I look at the difference between Studio and Producer I realize there is nothing I use that came in the producer package. If I could trade in my copy of Producer for Studio I would gladly do it.

To answer the OP - no, I have not upgraded. There is nothing there I want or need other than some people reporting better stability with it installed. But Cakewalk should give all of us that stability in a FIX, not make us pay for it!

My future with Cakewalk is going to depend on the next update patch.
If the next update reads "you need Expanded to install this update" I will be placing my money on a new option.

Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take!

Re:Who Here Didn't Upgrade to Expanded? 2011/10/21 13:02:41 (permalink)
I haven't upgraded either I would like the easy synth replace but I feel it should have been implemented from the the start I don't need or want the soundcloud  feature and the xml feature should be import and export capable. As for the prochannel addons it seems to me as to others that it's simply an attempt to lock users into paying for plugins that can't be used in any other program  as I see it if I have a prochannel strip without the addons I would probably be less inclined to use it as it wouldn't be full featured it would in effect be prochannel lite.I would prefer spending money on 3rd party plugins the only reason to use prochannel would be if it used far less resources than a combination of 3rd party plugins and if it had a superior sound which is something I'm less than convinced of.There are lots of niggles about X1 e.g. emagic screensets from  more than a decade ago are eminently superior in their implementation than Sonar's version. For a start they work flawlessly and you get 99 per project if I set up a screenset in Logic it is recalled instantly and in the exact way it was saved every time. It doesn't work like that for me in X1c  in fact the much vaunted workflow in X1 leaves me feeling that maybe  presonus S1 might be more useful to me .This upgrade feels like a mild fleecing to me to put it mildly.I think it would be better if cakewalk offered  a top of the line version with all the bells and whistles with all extra upgrades(like prochannel proprietary modules) for free i.e. until the next major version. I paid for the top version and within months I'm asked to pay more  for the even more top version I don't like that way of doing business.I'm sure they could really care less though because they have my money now and the marketing will always hook some new users.
