are they pirated versions of existing libraries? CL is bad about pirate software, but if its someones own product, how hard can it be to make a beatz???

Jokes aside, I was hoping somebody had an answer to Beagle's question. I've wondered about this myself. The "beatz" market seems aimed at wannabe hip-hop artists, but every hip-hop recording I've ever heard uses some variation of the same beat; it's part of what defines the genre. None of them are particularly complex, at least not to the extent that anyone with a sense of rhythm couldn't easily come up with their own.

Suckas buys dem.... would be my guess. the wannabee's Dave mentioned. The ones who are hip hoppers in their own minds and have no musical ability except to cuss in rhyme...... and no computer with which to make sum beatz.

Beagle I don't understand the market at all. who creates and sells these "beats", exactly what ARE they and who buys them? Doesn't make sense to me either on the surface because if we were talking about loops I would think anyone could find "free" ones to download somewhere. So I can come up two other possibilities: 1. Guys are making said beats and trying to sell them. 2. Perhaps it's a euphemism for something far less legal than pirated intellectual property.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I would think that quality "Beatz" are more than just a drum groove. Some are very well produced and arranged. Some have pre-built hooks. The sheeple that buy them think they are the next big thing but all they need is a track to sing/rap their drivel to and then they will be a star. I think it's a pretty big market as all the prey on the ignorance markets go (the fringes and mainstay of the "music biz"). I checked my CL (didn't know what CL meant either) and got nothing. Soundclick has a big market I think. come to think of it, I think that most musicians have a better chance selling their track/beatz to other wannabe's than selling their finished song.

The "beatz" that I simply cannot compute (shaddup, grandpa) are the ones that purposely "drag" against the beat. They are quite literally out of time and break the, so called, groove. Why would anyone want to NOT have a groove???

I have some groovin' sine waves for sale. Buy two and I'll throw in an authentic sawtooth, just like the ones used by DeadMau5.

I think prepackaged beats can be useful. Firstly, if you're just starting out with making music and have no idea how a beat is constructed, it's very useful to be able to look at a MIDI beat and figure out what's going on with the kick, hats and snare. Sure you could "learn to play the drums" but not everyone has the means, time or space to do this. Everyone has to start somewhere. I remember in the early days of drum & bass music, or "jungle" as it was called back then, almost every track was built upon a sample of a drum break in the middle of The Winston's "Amen Brother." It's the classic break beat, and everyone who was messing around with beat based music at the time would at some point attempt to program their own version - let me tell you that's a hard feel to get down if you don't have a drummer's ear! So even back then in the early 90's there were people swapping floppy discs with MIDI files of these break beats. If you have any artistic credibility though, you wouldn't use these beats "as is," you'd mess around with them and twist them into your own thing. I think that's what a lot of people do with prepackaged beats these days. I've got some of the Groove Monkee ones (played by a real drummer) and they're excellent to use as a starting point. You can tailor them to your needs, requantize them, chop them up, add to them, subtract from them etc. I'm not a drummer and I don't have a clue how to drum. So for the time being I will use prepackaged beats from time to time. I don't think there's any shame in it. Long term, I'd like to be able to finger drum like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K2aynMMBpo
