Me too 25 years ago. On local radio. That was with my new wave band.
One of these occasions was an hour during radio program with interviews. They had a local band every week.

And on local television too as an accompanying band for a singer that hosted a television show for kids. I remember I had to dress up as an aunt in a dress for the videoclip. These tapes are lost now of course.

But I'm sorry, I don't know any no bacon jokes.

Re: Who has had there music played on radio 2015/04/07 06:28:01 (permalink)
I've had some airplay with various projects, both ones I recorded/produced as well as my own bands.

It has done a lot for some, and absolutely nothing for others.. Not trying to be clever, but my take on it is that it adds to your presence and legitimacy as a muso, along with name recognition, but that one song getting a bit of airplay is worth far less than some solid live performances, touring and web presence - especially in the new age of the indi business model. If you have a hit, well then that's different... but what are the odds?

One of my most successful clients has never had ANY airplay, yet has sold Gold (25 000) between two albums in South Africa, and she has had 200 000+ views on Youtube of her live performances. But then, she works like a dog and has an audience more loyal than most. She has had a song on an American TV advert (YP.com) and has had tour invites from some major artists around the world incl Shawn Phillips and Lucinda Williams - all on the strength of great albums and killer live performance.

Then again, I've earned some nice money from a ballad I wrote a few years ago.

If you're asking if you should chase airplay with all your heart.. well, it depends on your genre and your level of commitment. If you're a rapper or a pop diva, spend your energy getting airplay. If you're a band, go tour if you can. If you have a manager etc, get them to push steadily until something comes of it. And avoid bribing DJs or paying for likes - word gets around :O)

Your Mileage May Vary, as they say :O)

    Best of bacon, sorry, luck,

Re: Who has had there music played on radio 2015/04/07 09:00:38 (permalink)
I've had several of my original songs played on the air.

A radio station sponsored a song writing contest and I submitted a song to it. That song won the contest and was played on the station for a few days. This actually happened 2 different times with 2 completely different radio stations.  One of the prizes was a portable radio..... I'd probably have appreciated a slab of bacon because at the time I was young and broke, and mostly hungry.

A band I was in played a community event sponsored by a local radio station and part of the set was played live across the air.  Nothing worth writing home about.

Some time later, I was driving down the road and heard a local station play one of my songs during a programming segment that featured local artists. I had sent them a CD with 10 originals and they selected one of them.

Nothing ever came from any of those events..... no royalties, and no record companies knocking down my door, and no bacon.

Yep, they have a disc that has 3 of our Scandalous Grace songs and the station in Austin, TX also has a CD of my latest solo work that they have been playing on regular rotation.  I have received several phone calls from the station manager to discuss the songs; the last one being 2-3 weeks ago.  That station is non-profit, so we won't see anything but some publicity.

I also forwarded, "Thief" on the Songs Forums, to a station in San Antonio, TX that was looking for slower Indie Work to be played over the Easter weekend.  I don't think it got played, she said she would notify me by Facebook before each on air play, so that I had a chance to hear it.  The San Antonio station was looking for stuff that was REALLY main stream for the Easter weekend, so she said it would have a better chance of being played later.  She really liked the song, though, so it sounded like it would eventually be played.

Yes, a few times, most recently on a UK local radio station last year. Appeared on a local TV cable show 'back in the day' too, that was fun. Played 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy' in a garden in Swindon. Aah, the glitz, the glamour..

Yes, circa 1981. A Santa Barbara radio station had a local music show and our band was interviewed live. They played 4 of our songs.
We got famous and rich and then retired to Hawaii.

1979/80 Radio play mid-north cost Australia, including weekly promotions for events.  1988/89 air play, various radio stations NSW and QLD, Australia.  Early 1990s music video aired on ABCTV (Rage) and SBSTV (StreetNoise) including interview.

    What has it done?

Obviously the best form of promotion for example, resulted in venues packed to the rafters and sold-out independently released EP.

Though the bad also came along for the ride i.e. insomnia, stress, anxiety levels off the charts, security, stalkers and writers cramp.  I never want to go through all that again, but if I had to? Be totally anonymous (some how, but I doubt that can happen)!  Planet Earth is a freaking nut house

Yup. Actually I was sitting in the studio doing an interview for the release, so it was kind of odd, anti-climatic as an experience. I managed to catch it once or twice afterwards. Not much came out of it, but, it's a nice moment nonetheless (and it showed me that I could handle interviews. :P

The coolest thing was watching people dancing to my music on the dance floor of a club. A bit like playing live, but actually preferable to me because you can sit there and watch it from a distance, and get to see how people react to your music, not to you or what's going on onstage.

Re: Who has had there music played on radio 2015/04/07 17:58:39 (permalink)
In my band days, we had a half hour slot on my then local radio station. It was called GWR then, but I think is called something else now. The evening show did a feature on a local band each week, so we managed to get on it one week to plug a 3 track EP that we had just released independently.(Was supposed to have been 4 tracks but ran out of studio time to mix the 4th and couldn't afford any more !). They played all three tracks and filled the rest of the time with band interview & chit-chat. It seemed very cool to the 19 yr old me.

Funny thing was, I worked in a factory at the time that had the same radio station playing in the background all the time and a couple of weeks later I was walking around doing what I was there to do and I heard the DJ introduce this "new" tune that he had taken a liking to after being given it by one of the other DJ's to listen to. It started playing and seemed somehow familiar, but I couldn't quite bring to mind why it seeing as it was supposed to be new and figured that it must be one of those that just remind you of something else..then.....D'oh ! I'd lived and breathed the bloody thing for months, but it took me until the chorus kicked for the penny to drop ! The singer also worked there and nobody would believe it was us on the radio until the next time it was on and he had to sing along to prove it was really him.

I heard it quite a few times over the following weeks at various times, and in the factory the various old (to me) women who worked there took great delight in singing along (read murdering it) once it became known around the factory floor that it was by "our" band. It was quite amusing to see/hear and I did feel just a little bit famous for a little while.

The EP sold enough to recover all the costs and anything over that got spent on tarting up our rehearsal room as it wasn't really worth divvying up 5 ways.

This wasn't real but radio nevertheless.

I knew the owner and only DJ of the local radio station here in rural colorado.
He put one of my tunes up.

I heard it at the hardware store. That was a mind blower but:
The Optimod didn't like my final mix/master cause it sounded like toppy squashed lifeless junk.

I have never had my own music on the radio, but then again I haven't composed much since college, but many of my recordings have been played.  Of course since the recording engineer is never acknowledged on the radio, hasn't done anything for my business.  Tomorrow night, April 9th there is an entire show at 7pm PST on XLNC1 radio with all my recordings.  If you are so inclined to listen it will be streaming online at the same time at XLNC1.org.

    1967, 1979, 1980.

But the coolest one was when I recorded a commercial for my drum teaching. "This is Jim Saad" ... bang boom boom dat, crash, etc.
I was in Santa Barbara in 1970 and recorded it at the local 16 track studio. It sounded great.
I actually got some students from it!
I taught drums for a living for a few years while I was attending Santa Barbara City College in 1970. Had about 25 students a week.

Later, I moved up to San Francisco and recorded their lessons on cassette. They would hear what I wanted and I would write out their homework.  Then they would record their lesson and send it back.
I used to go to the post office each morning to see if I got any lessons that day. The checks they sent helped me pay the rent!

    Sorry I went off track.

A regional Wisconsin radio station had a weekly "Slam it or Jam it!" night when they would play two unknown songs  back to back asking their audience to "slam it" (thumbs down) or "jam it" (thumbs up). This was in the early '80's and my song "Perpetual Emotion" was played against "In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins (just released).  The audience voted to "slam" Phil's song and "jam" mine. His tune became a huge hit and mine, well just some nice regional airplay................ anyway it sure felt good that night to get that kind of response in a blind test................life goes on ...............Ron

The closest I've had was when a friend used his iPod for the music at a large tournament event and had a couple of our songs on the playlist.  It was really cool when one song came on in the main hall and I heard someone say "Hey, who's this?  I like it!"

I've saved myself of the letdown.

Heck, I told you that when I get back to doing shows, that I wanted to play the CHB!

But it already feels like it's dead? Hey, we all go around and round and round saying that some of the old stuff is dead ... so I will do the CHB, right next to the Kinks' I wanna be just like David Watts, so at least we can appreciate honest inspiration!

    Hahaha!!!

(NOTE:) The Kinks song will be going backwards right over a CHB song and 3 other sound effects at the same time, and with Klaus Schulze over it in half speed, and a record of what to do in case of a nuclear bomb also going backwards. This way, at least, the CHB will sound perfectly clear and good!
