Who likes their (landline) phone?
Hi- I'm trying to find a decent phone to replace my Philips which still works great except it keeps dying in the middle of a call (even with brand new batteries, no warning, just complete cut-off). I just want a phone with a handset and speakerphone base that has a decent call quality so, oh, I don't know, both people can actually hear what the other is saying even if (gasp!) one talks over the other from time to time. I've tried an AT&T (breaks up) and a Panasonic which just arrived yesterday. The first person I called said "You're breaking up." Not a good sign. The quality of sound on the Philips is excellent until it cuts off, and I'd replace it with another if they hadn't stopped making phones :(. All suggestions welcome! TIA- -Susan

Had a conversation breaking up- a lot of static- the other day... There is a junction box on the side of my house where all the phone lines gather. I pulled all the wires loose, rubbed them with some sandpaper to remove the funk and all is crystal clear.

Hi spacey- Good thought, but the thing is my Philips phone is still perfectly clear as long as I leave it on the base, so I don't think it's my wires. Thanks- -Susan

Hi Mike- My ancient cell phone doesn't want to keep a charge either ;), so I'll have to get a new one soon. The choices there are very daunting--which one do you like? I'm only seeing a few brands of landline phones online, mostly AT&T, Panasonic (which I've tried), Uniden and VTech. I'll keep trying the Panasonic for a bit, since it's possible that was just one bad connection and it has gotten good reviews. Thanks- -Susan

So many out there and ya can get 1 for nothing from most cell companies if you have service with them. Smart phones will cost a little extra to have because of the data plans but for going online when out and about they can be a huge help. Ive used it for getting around when I dont have my GPS, for price matching other stores, updating posts in here and Facebook, etc... For a smart phone Ive been using the Captivate and I should be getting my new iPhone in today (HOPEFULLY) Apple is or has taken over the world in about everything and rightly should-they actually have MORE money than our government!!! Really all depends on your needs and how much or what you use it for daily.

Susan, do you perhaps have a wireless router in your house? They operate at 2.4 Ghz frequency and so do the "common" cordless phones. thus interference and breaking up, static, etc.The new breed of 5.8 ghz phones are better This quote taken from the Cisco site regarding interference: You can't sweep away the interference problem. Microwave ovens, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, wireless video cameras, outdoor microwave links, wireless game controllers, Zigbee devices, fluorescent lights, WiMAX devices, and even bad electrical connections-all these things can cause broad RF spectrum emissions. These non-802.11 types of interference typically don't work cooperatively with 802.11 devices.

I have a panasonic set... one or two years old. Works fine. Sounds like you may have a lot of stray RF or a competing signal. The likelihood its the set seems rather small. If many phones have problems, then i would suspect the line itself, not the phone.

We have our phone service through our cable provider,so it hooks into the cable system. I use an AT&T phone set with three sets of phones/bases. This is bluetooth so I can link my cell to it when I'm at home. I have had these for over two years with no problems. Just an idea. If you have perfect service when the phone sits in the cradle and if you are having a total cutoff as opposed to a scratchy sound. I would clean the battery connections. Another possiblity is maybe you have your phone base on a switched outlet. If the outlet is switched, then it won't keep the phone charged if you turn it off. Try removing the battery and looking for corrosion on the terminals. You can take a small screw driver end or a small wire brush and scratch off the corrosion.Sometimes a connection will appear ok but will have a layer on it that prevents a good connection.

I don't think there is such a thing as a true land line phone anymore. Phone company's switched to VoIP quite a while ago ... or so I've been told by Quest, the phone people here in the Midwest. I have Panasonic phones. They sound great. I'm a big fan of Panasonic electronics. They aren't the cheapest in the world because they don't compromise quality.

I've always liked Panasonic stuff too, but this phone isn't up to par with the Philips. I just spoke to someone I talk on the phone with regularly and she said there was a slightly metallic sound throughout the conversation and that the voices being cut off problem I had with the last one I tried (AT&T) was still there with this one. I have to repeat myself and I almost feel like I should say "Over" when I finish saying something. I should clarify that this is using the speakerphone on the base unit. I think the handset sounds metallic, but I don't think it has the cutoff problem. I opened the Philips and the battery connections are the spring type on both +/- ends. I'm not sure how to clean those. What happens with it is that I can be in the middle of a call and the display goes black and the call is terminated with no low battery warning or warning of any kind. I've tried recharging the original batteries as well as several sets of new batteries. However, when I use the Philips with the handset on the speakerphone base I have absolutely no problems with clarity, cutoffs, etc. This is with the Philips plugged in exactly the same as the new phones I'm trying out. Thanks for all the feedback. Oh, the phone is the KX-TG6641 with DECT 6.0 technology if it matters. -Susan

I have a Motorola L404, base w/handset and three other handsets in different rooms, it works great. I really need to upgrade these Blackberry Pearls... ugh. I have to keep the trackball surround/holder in place with clear tape. Thinking about going HTC. http://www.newegg.com/Pro...dwords-_-pla-_-NA-_-NA Julien

I've got Panasonic 5.8ghz's as well. My old set (a base with eight extensions) is used for our office. The batteries sometime get warm and spontaneously turn the phone off (usually after an hour of constant use), but that's the only issue they've ever had. I got my Mom a newer version and she's never had any issue at all!
