I would say that any frustrations that I've had previously with Sonar have dropped 90% with the last few updates. Performance wise it's on fire at this point, and I feel like I'm (largely) at one with the Sonar workflow. These are indeed golden times at Cakewalk.

There was a bit of a transition in thinking after using Reason for a while, but yeah -- SONAR Platinum just rocks once you get it under your control a bit.

SONAR Platinum, Win7 Home Premium 64bit, Sweetwater Creation Station CS250v21 (Ivy Bridge Core i5 3.4Ghz CPU, 12GB DDR3/1600Mhz RAM, 500GB/1TB Seagate Barracuda system/audio drives, SATA 6.0, USB 3.0), M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB, 2x KRK Rokit 5's, Yamaha MO8

Mark me down as "happy" as well.  I love the "subscription" model as well.  I think the Sonar team provides excellent service and their temperament is a benchmark for the business.  And this forum is tiptop for help and support.

Totally happy with Sonar Platinum and the new direction CW is taking er.

With the new format, I've learned to use more of Sonar then I had even attempted before!
The program runs faster, sharper and has been overall more reliable.
I enjoy using Sonar and look forward to using it as often as possible.
Isn't that what it's about?  Getting me to make more music?

Re: Who's happy with Sonar? 2015/12/28 17:27:13 (permalink)
I started with Sonar because I couldn't afford Pro Tools.  At the time, Pro Tools was considered the software that "real" engineers used while Cakewalk was the poor mans option (and I fit the description).  Fast forward a decade and here I am, still using Sonar NOT because I cannot afford to purchase Pro Tools; but because I choose Sonar.  I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given to work with Pro Tools (its definitely quality software), but I always turn down the opportunity to switch over because I simply feel Sonar is far more innovative and user focused than any other software I've used.  Granted, there may be some level of comfort associated with my opinion, but I can also draw clear comparisons in which I believe Sonar comes out on top for what I am looking for in a DAW.  So, to conclude this message I will say THANKS SONAR for the awesome platform and for putting up with my whiny complaints! Your the best in my book.  Now, about that vocal rider plug in Ive been asking for....

I miss Sonar. I just couldn't stand Windows anymore and switched to Mac. This was, however, after 4 years contemplating to do the switch. Eventually I decided I had to let Sonar go. I still have it on a Windows partition to open old projects, but my main DAW is Logic. I'm like an old granny with Logic but I'm liking it more and more and have finished quite a few projects. But leaving Sonar was not because I didn't love the software anymore. Opening it up in Windows feels like home. Then Windows find a way to piss me off again. I would love to see Sonar on Mac but I am not holding my breath.

Anyway, thumbs up for Sonar and for this forum. it's all great stuff! Loving Sonar, and I miss it. I still visit the forum from time to time

The whole concept of Pro Tools turned me off even before I really got into recording.

Proprietary gear to use the program?

Dongles to "prove" I'm not a thief despite paying a butt ton of scratch?

Plugins must be deemed "worthy" by the lords of Avid to work in the program?

Fudge that noise. I know it's not QUITE as bad as that anymore since they started catering to the "hobbyiest" but the distaste was already there.

Also the film place I used to work at as a grunt used Avid systems in their editing bays. All the production/editing nerds made up a series of kitchy stickers with the slogan "Avid Sucks" and plastered them on the systems in protest.

That was a REAL company that churned out "for broadcast" video and even films. I didn't know WTF it all meant back then (because I was just swinging hammers, hauling trash and scrubbing toilets) but yeah... even the "pros" were/are sick of their shiz.

If I got my grubby paws on a proper PT setup would I give it a whirl? Definitely... but I sure ain't twisting my nuts up over not having it. It is WAY down the list of DAWs I would buy if I had the cash.

/typical anti PT rant

Edit: I think I would like Logic... but I don't think I'll ever be able to afford a Mac any time soon.

I've been forced to learn Pro Tools and work on a Mac as of late and i don't see the advantages.  Maybe I'm old and stubborn to learn new things,  but the Pro Tools system is not any more stable and the Mac system is nothing i go ..."Whew look at that, look how easy that is".  Quite the opposite.

Meh, I can't believe anyone really likes Sonar that much.   And no, I can't even write that with a straight face.

2015 has really been a banner year for Sonar, and for Cakewalk as a company.  And things are just getting started!   As good as the past year has been for SPlat, just imagine this discussion next year...

I had a few problems with SPLAT as it's now called but Since the latest release..listen guys I was getting drop outs even when I went to another program and nothing was running...now I have left my computer on all day with Sonar in the back ground and me just playing addictive keys on my keyboard and not one solitary drop out. I have become more comfortable with it of late too...I remember Home studio 4 I also remember when Sonar was changing from Home studio 8 to X1 was it a right move yes indeed it was...even looking at studio one by presonus is not so much of a problem now cos I like working in Sonar...I have gone back to projects that were unfinished and working on them cos Platinum feel just right. Well done chappies!

Funny story: When Brian Hardgroove got fed up with the Mac and Pro Tools simultaneously, I suggested he give SONAR and Windows a try. He was reluctant and very skeptical, but he knew I was digging it so he was at least open to the idea. Our first conversation:

"But I don't have a SONAR audio interface, I've never even seen a SONAR interface. Where do I buy one that works with SONAR?"
"They all do. The one you have now will work fine."
"But it's not a SONAR interface."
"Yes, it is. Any decent interface is a SONAR interface."
[pause as the reality of that statement sunk in]
"Wait a second. You mean I don't need to buy a new interface?"
"That's right."

Definitely got him started off on the right foot

I haven't weighed in on this thread because it's obvious I'm happy with SONAR. But, I have to say I was not expecting the recent optimizations and they have really made a big difference. Everything is just so much smoother now.

Although I have not upgraded onto the Platinum platform, I was undergoing a writers block throughout this year. New software tools and workflow improvements are always a welcome to many of members here. The craft of producing a good tune is the patience of building solid foundation tracks then layer ideas to build on. Trust me from the early days of portastudios, the DAW has taken home recording to producing pretty good performances and mixes, once you figured out the tools that we have at our fingertips.

So yeah I like the stability of Sonar and its newest features that seem to be enhancing the DAW to a musicians to get their creative juices flowing

Re: Who's happy with Sonar? 2015/12/31 19:27:17 (permalink)
I'm amazed at how much better I find SONAR Lexington Plat over X3 .Last night I had a very real to me "convincing eye and ear opener " .
Here's the story of what happened,
I've been working on a new tune on my Win 10 laptop .This tune is a demo / lets learn some of the new things and features in SPlat  . The tune started out as the CA amp template and what i did was use all the various amps for all my guitar tones . In addition to using that template to start my song  , I added a bunch of other tracks and instruments to the project ..
stuff like Session Drummer as a multi , myself playing a real Bass ,  Dim Pro and a couple of other things...
Since I hadn't put ADD drums on this computer yet ( Win 10 ) I decided to  copy over my song project over to my external HD and open the song up on my Win 8 computer ...that computer has everything I've bought in the past 2 years on it  ...
The main reason I wanted to use that machine was I figured I may find some better drum parts to my song VIA ADD drums and some of the drum packs I purchased that were installed ...
Here's where it got interesting ....
Instead of opening  Splat first I hunted down the project on the HD and when it was found I simply opened it ...
I wasn't thinking much of it and I was not concerned when the project defaulted to having X3 open it ...
A little box came up and said what it had to say about this project was created in a different version of SONAR and it may sound different ...
I go and hit play and there was not one thing effects and amp sim wise from Splat that had made the trip over to X3 ...my tune sounded like what a Movie Star would look like the day after partying all night long into the crack of dawn and not even having a drop of make up or any enhancements what so ever the following morning after
I was like WOW ...I guess I need all the help I can get ....SPat to the rescue ...lol
BTW I'm very happy I had this little  accident ...
Thankfully I survived my brief encounter with my song sounding like the soundtrack of a Moose gasping his last breath on the side of the road in his final moment of Road Kill ...
live and learn ...also I love not taking myself too seriously
that's my story on how much more I love Splat over X 3 and I'm sticking to it

Kenny

I think the new monthly updates concept has been incredible in the initial 12 month period. At the present time I think Cakewalk have struck a nice balance between adding new toys and developing optimisations/stability improvements and bug fixes. Sonar can't be 100% all things to all people and there will obviously always be debate. But I am very impressed with the commitment to the originally stated objectives, and very happy that at this point in time, the prophets of doom who were preaching destruction for Cakewalk under Gibson ownership have been completely wrong. So it's probably also appropriate to tip our hats to Gibson management, that have allowed the Cakewalk team the freedom, encouragement and finance to develop and deliver a superior product, a product that was obviously inhibited under Roland ownership.

A Happy New Year of health, wealth and music to all.

Regards

Are not most DAW forums full of **** sessions?  All you need to do is go over to "another grass is greener DAW because I never tried it" is full of the same thing.
At least the complaints do not fall on deaf ears. People involved with the development of Sonar are involved in the forum and that is very important in keeping users.  Propellerheads dropped their forum, not active on their FB page either.   They take a 50% cut off rack extensions from developers.  I would not be surprised if Reason is either acquired or cease development with in 10 years.  They spend their time promoting their free iPad apps.  Most of their users make sure it goes to the spam folder.  They sealed off all communication with the end user.
Something else I thought of is how 3rd party developers believe in Sonar. Do you think AAS and XLN would waste their time offering their products with Cakewalk?

Big ole +1 there.   I never would have thought that a product like SONAR could flourish under a company like Gibson so much more so than Roland... it just doesn't seem feasible.   But reality has proven otherwise many times over.   These is the beginning of a new era for SONAR.

Though I love Sonar and have for years, I do tend to get frustrated with dropouts or other problems from time to time. Part of that can be my own PC limitations. But if it's bad enough, can get great support with a phone call or a visit here. I can't wait till this new PC I got is ready to work with Sonar again...just one more firewire controller so I can hook up my desk and I should be in business!

Greetings Community,

I have been a Cakewalk user since 2000 starting with Guitar Tracks and currently using Platinum and I am extremely  satisfied. The program with monthly upgrades is great and though I may not have an immediate need for some of the new features it's nice to have them in the arsenal should I have the need for them in the future.  I like the performance upgrades that improve stability and performance.  My recordings have never sounded better.  I look forward to the 2016 offerings.  Thanks to everyone at Cakewalk for providing a great product and a happy and prosperous new year to all of you music makers.

I was tracking a band (a band I've recorded many times since X1) this past week using Sonar and arming 17 tracks per drum take. Other than not being able to record multiple takes per project (Comping mode) due to Audio Dropouts, Sonar never crashed! Before in X1/X2, it crashed every session, several times! (Yeah, I'm still hurting from the X2 issues -- I won't ever forget how bad X2 was for us). But Platinum is working just fine!!

It did crash when I opened a few Waves plug-ins for the first time since Platinum was installed, but otherwise, it's been solid.

A few minor gripes, still:
1) Clicking Apply and Close for Preferences hoses up the system for a good few seconds, many times when adjusting I/O buffers.
2) Still some wonky-ness in Take Lane expansion when Auto Zoom is enabled. Sometimes the wrong Folder expands.
3) At times, editing Gain envelopes (automation) still gives me issues when I'm not able to add, edit, or move automation points. This is an issue I've had since X2, and reported it a few times. Spend some time with envelopes, and it'll show it's face.
4) Faders are still too small, especially for 'touch'.
5) Sonar seems to introduce static when pre-mastering with loudness, depending on the plug-in. It still can't handle this task inline, especially when mixing. In other words, if I'm intending on creating a very loud master, I can't use Sonar to accomplish that to a professional degree. I don't use Sonar for Mastering, since it lacks the metering and other Mastering tools I require, but for a quick "check" on dynamic pressure in a loud mix, it works pretty well.
