I figure any "musical artist" who can't hear that they're not really singing may not have good headphones.

I just bought a nickle one and a brass one... and I'm playing my arms off trying to get in shape for doing it with style.

:-)
I'm surprised you didn't attempt to make your own tam.

Could be an interesting project.

I wonder if Karyn has any suggestions.  Does cowbell technique translate to tambourine?

FWIW,
My primary arm is about to fall off. I played a bunch of tambourine yesterday and really got in to the listening aspect and working really hard to make the instrument contribute to the grove rather than destroy it.

I didn't record anything yet... I need to get some perspective. :-)

I'm hoping I can develop my weak arm to be a bit more expressive with the rhythm so that I can use my good arm for tapping effects.

I have had some tambourines for any years but somehow, something in me clicked recently and I realized that if you want to do "pop" songs you have to study the tambourine... so that's what I am doing.  :-)

A recent visitor remarked that if I was serious I would buy a few brass tambourines and that has set me off on this latest adventure.

 Good times.

 best regards,
mike

You're right, Mike, and so many people think the tamborine is just a "toy" but it really isn't.  it can be a very important part of the percussion and can make or break a groove.

during our Monday night service there's always a 2 to 4 people on the front row with tamborines, shakers, other things and they drive me nuts because they're always off beat...urgh!

Look up Ray Cooper. I used to go and see Eric Clapton every year for four or five years at his annual Royal Albert Hall gigs and Ray Cooper was his percussionist.

I have never seen the tambourine made so entertaining ever. What a legend. If I knew he was performing as part of a backing band I'd buy tickets on the strength of that. I'm not kidding he's that good.

I read an interesting article once concerning early Motown recordings and the tambourine parts playing an important role in the rythym tracks.  It was a great read on mixing and production. It included some audio tracks   with just the Tam track and then with the mix. Very interesting how "odd" the tam sounded naked, The article also delved into the counterpunctal and odd rythym playing  of the percussion that made the Motown sound .

For those who get into this style of music, the video below is excellent.  But it also shows some interesting tambourine abuse - lol!  I love how one of the comments had to say "The tambourine is not being amplified."  Heh...
