Why Did You Do It..collab w/ Paul Russell, Ed McG

Paul asked me to do the vocal on this cool tune, and Ed McG did the sax part. Paul did everything else in his studio Calamity Pop in Kuala Lumper.

    Here's a playable/downloadable link

Even before I started laying down the bed for this one I knew who I would ask to do the vocal. Luckily Randy agreed and, in Ed's words 'really delivered the vibe'. He has just the right timbre for the track, as while we didn't want to do a carbon copy, the original song was so perfect we also didn't want to stray too far away from it. I'm very pleased with the way this turned out as it's one of my all time faves.

The drums are Joe Baressi Evil Drums for Superior Drummer 2. The brass blasts are built from a sample disc by Greg Adams (Tower of Power). I used Melodyne to make the chords fit.

Jonbouy-Yeah, I was really flattered when Paul asked me to do this.
The guy has some serious chops, and some of the best ears around.

Karyn-I love the horns too. Thanks.

Mark, We don't get to hear Ed's sax playing enough. He smokes on this.

Timothy, Sultry eh? That's an interesting word for the vocal. I was going for a cross between the original and the guy from Alabama3 (The Sopranos theme singer). That'll work man, thanks

Ed, I appreciate your comments. Paul is an outstanding mixer, not to mention a top notch musician.

Jimmy, That octave up part really takes that last section to another level. Glad you liked it.

Not familiar with the band or track, but it reminded me of the Average white band in parts. This track has a great funky vibe and the rhythm guitars are especially infectious. The vocals are perfect and sound excellent. The horns are a great addition when they come in. You make it sound effortless. Nice mix and production to top it off. Excellent work all round guys.

I don't believe I ever heard the song before.

The groove does have a 70's funky white boy feel to it fo-sho!

The performances were top notch. No crits there.

The only thing, and since I know how hot this is, I'll listen again tonight on the cans..... cheap computer speakers don't do it proper justice...... anyway, the mix sounds a bit rounded off on the high end. No crispness or air to it. More bottom heavy than balanced..... I'll listen again later with better transducers.

Either way, gents... this is pretty hot.... or cool, yeah, it's good.

edit: I'd have a look at the EQ on it. Other tunes are nice and crisp where they need to be.

    Hi Randy,

I like this a lot. The only crit I have is, it sounds a little heavy in the upper part of the low end. It's a little foggy for my taste.

    Thanks,

    Bub.

Hah. I picked up on that too. I never read any of the other responses on a song until I've posted mine. I do that to gauge how well I pick up on things and to see if anyone else hears what I hear too.

Again though, great tune. I really liked it.

All aspects are real nice - performance and production!

The mix is indeed siding on the low end and the bass is a little bit muddy, but i guess that's how you like it.

I also heard two instances of vocal clipping, although i don't know if that is deliberate or not.

Check out my band's song on YouTube!
