Why PC vs MAC samples are so different in size, a dummy question

Hello, I just got another DSF expansion collection, Real Old World Instruments (was lucky to have 20% discounted price still available as a campanion discount for the latest Dimension LE 19.99$ April deal), and again there was an option to download PC or MAC installation. I noticed again that there is a significant file(s) size difference between both MAC and PC editions. Is it because of MAC and PC audio file format differences? Could you please make a short intro for a dummy? Thanks!

    i would guess its because they are compressed with different file compression types. windows uses .zip and osx uses .dmg.
