Why am I suddenly getting audio popping?

AMD dual core 5000+, 32-bit os, Windows XP, 4G.

Sonar 8, Edirol UA-101

It worked fine until recently and now I'm getting pops in the audio. Why? Why did I ever give up my reel-to-reel?

Is it off the internet? , no wireless gizmos. Laptop battery management.
Hard drive getting full or needing defragmenting.

Run the dpclat meter to see if something is running in background

Try going to Options->Audio and making either your latency setting longer (WDM) or buffer setting bigger (ASIO.)

Thank you JohnnyV. I defragged the hard drive (I can't remember when I did it last) and then shut off the McAfee virus program that runs a scan continuously. That did it. No more popping. I'm pretty sure it was the McAfee.

That link you posted for the program didn't work, but in this case I didn't need it.

I've got another problem so bizarre that I'll start a new ticket for it.

Anyway, thanks again for those who read and commented. For those of us who aren't very adept at computers and all the software that goes into recording through a desktop workstation, this forum is great.
