Why can't I drag MIDI clips into the browser?
It is quite simple. All I want to do is to export a MIDI clip for use in another project. So I drag it into the browser and drop it into a folder I've created for the purpose. Lo and behold, it appears in the browser as a MIDI file. But when I try and drag the clip back into the track window, nothing happens. The cursor has a little + sign to suggest that it's going to drop something into the track, but it doesn't drop anything. I have had no trouble dragging 3rd party MIDI clips into a track - that all works fine. It's only when I've dragged my own MIDI clip from the track into the browser, and back again, that it doesn't appear in the track. Any suggestions? This seems like one of those things which should work but it doesn't. EDIT: I just tried the following: drag a 3rd party MIDI clip into the track window. It appears as a clip. Drag said clip back to the browser. Drag that clip back into the track window. It doesn't appear. What in God's name is going on?

So it seems that if I drag the clips into a folder on the desktop, and then drag them back, they are placed on the track correctly. Therefore dragging MIDI clips to the browser doesn't actually result in the MIDI clip being saved to file. It just saves an empty file (I've tried playing it with WMP). This has to be a bug, yes?

Dragging a midi clip I created to the browser does create an actual midi file in whatever folder I dragged it to. I opened it in Media Player and it played fine. No problem dragging back to the timeline for me either. I just used a clip with notes, velocity, and pan control changes, though, so maybe you have other data that's causing a problem or something.

Nope, nothing unusual about these clips at all. There's only notes and velocity. If I drag them onto the desktop, they work fine. If I drag them into the desktop via the browser, I just get files of 4K which have no notes in them.

Are you using a Simple Instrument Track by any chance? I think there's a bug with exporting MIDI clips from those. It should work okay if you split the track.

I have never tried to do this but when I want to move a MIDI clip from one project to another I use one of two methods. One method is to copy and paste from one project to another. The other is to export then import the clip as a MIDI file. I will try your method later tonight.

Yeah it could be because it's a simple instrument track. It's just strange how they export fine when I drag them to the desktop, but not when I drag them into the browser.

If I select a clip and choose export from the file menu, the MIDI option is greyed out.

it's actually save as. you can select the track the midi is on then choose save as and specify midi format file from the save as type option. the export as selection only applies to midi sequences you have turned into groove clips. if you select a groove clip then the export option is enabled.

Yeah, good call, it looks like that's what causes the problem. It seems to save the midi header in that case (which is why Sonar lets you drag it in to the timeline) but none of the actual midi data.

Yes, export was a typo. It is save as. Sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused.
