Why do people think NOW that our DAW will "stop working"
Theres no time bomb in it, as long as you are running a stable release, and can deal with the bugs up to now, since they wont get fixed. Having said that, I know when MS does updates it could/will break the CW products and any VSTs . So does one stop MS updates(if you can figure a way out of the automated update scheme) or take our luck and ride it as long as we can, or look for other daws . Harrison Mixbuss maybe.

I think the main worry is Windows 10 updates. Otherwise I will be using SONAR to the bitter end...

You could have Sonar on a machine disconnected from the 'net. It'll just be frozen in time.

When SONAR stops functioning in ways more than I can bear Studio One 3 Pro will likely be my next move. Maybe Reaper. I'll continue with Mixbus as my mix/master environment.

I still run a 15+ year old copy of Photoshop and it runs beautifully, though installing on new machines is a bit of a pain.

I have one piece of ancient (but critical) software for which I actually had to find a floppy drive last time I configured a new computer, because I needed the authorization that was on the floppy. But I was at least able to do it. Nowadays authorizations are all server-based and once they're shut down that's it (see: Kjaerhus). And this is what'll most likely be the issue down the road: re-authorizations. They'll keep the servers up for awhile, but somebody has to pay for that, and it won't be Gibson. So even though I plan to keep using SONAR for the immediate future, eventually there will be a new computer in that future. The kindest thing CW could do now is post unprotected versions of everything as a parting gift, but I doubt that'll happen.

and that's kinda wrong, they should at least have a big arse banner that you can't miss telling people that SONAR is dead and there will be no more support (well, I think everyone has known that for a good while) and there will be no more updates or bug fixes etc, that's just my thinking.

There isn't a warning at the store yet, and there should be. But it's good that you can still buy the products, because it may be your last chance to do so. They should have a going-out-of-business sale. Everything Must Go!

I was going to wait and see what the bakers do, but I have a bad feeling Studio one is the closest to what I am accustomed to, Reaper is just too convoluted for me

I have learned to use Samplitude Pro X3, which I picked up last year for a song. I'll switch to that if it looks like Sonar is about to keel over due to Windows or VST updates. Samplitude is a serious, heavy duty DAW with lots of features, and I didn't find it difficult to learn. It's not Sonar, but it will do the job... I bet that keeping an off-the-grid computer frozen in time with Sonar on it will work for a while, but eventually the real world will force it's way through. Some new-fangled library for Kontakt will require the latest version of Kontakt, which will require the latest version of Windows to run stably, which in turn will require an update to Windows that will render Sonar unstable...or some combination thereof...

As I'm still a happy 32 bit 8.5 user, I'm afraid I should upgrade on this very unstable moment and hope that I can get things running for my remaining years. But at what price...what when where... must keep my antennae out. I really hope they give clear information, and make things smooth for people in a similar situation as I am.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Yes there is. Doesn't Sonar require online activation? It's been a while since I installed it, but I'm almost certain it does.

Only once, it doesn't keep rechecking like some software does. If you're worried about having to reinstall on a different machine for whatever reason then there's always the offline activation method. Basically, download and keep an activation file. Might be wise to do this now....

right - but that "offline activation" is still a download from a server for you to transfer over to your offline machine. you still have to get the authorization from a cakewalk server. there's no completely offline authorization and if the authorization server goes away then no one will be able to reinstall on a new or repaired machine.

SONAR Platinum/Professional/Artist Offline ActivationAccess to the Internet from another computer is necessary in order to download the SONAR installers and to transfer the activation files. SONAR Platinum and SONAR Professional users should note that Addictive Drums 2 can only be installed on a computer with an Internet connection. - Visit your Cakewalk account to download the SONAR installers and transfer them to your offline computer.
- After installing SONAR, open the Help menu > Offline Activation > Export Activation Request to open the Save activation request dialog box.
Note that this menu option will not be available after SONAR has been activated. - Select the folder to which you want to save the activation request, then click Save. This generates an activation request file with a .crq extension.
Tip: save this file to a convenient location, like your Desktop or Documents folder, so it will be easy to find in the upcoming steps. - Copy the .crq file to an online computer (using a USB drive, for example).
- Using an online computer, open the Activate section of your Cakewalk account. Sign in with your Cakewalk username and password if necessary.
- Click the Select a File button to upload the .crq file.
