Why does the audio stops on heavy CPU?

I use VSTIs, in Ableton Live 5.0.1 when I play on them, and the CPU load goes high, the VSTI mutes, but then I can continue the playing on it. In Sonar 5.01 however when CPU load reachead a point, it stops the CPU (it says Audio Stopped), and then I can't play it, only if I remove it from the Synth Rack and load it again. ???

Anyway I noticed in Ableton Live the VST instruments eat less CPU, maybe it's better optimized there?

Use the reset button. Hopefully that will allow Sonar to play. Don't know about which is more optimized for VST, but since SONAR is DX, that might make it more CPU intensive. But from what I've read from Cake, VSTis are all over the place so some may work better in Cake while others not.

I tried the Reset button, then the Audio Stopped message dispappeared, however the VSTi stays muted. :(

live is optimised for live playback - you might find it doesn't do so well at higher latencies whereas sonar might play more at higher latencies.

Dave, I tried them at the same latency settings and Live beats Sonar in every VSTi's CPU usage.
However it wasn't a big problem (since I don't use it for live) if I shouldn't load the VSTi every time again and again in Sonar, when the Audio Stopped by the high CPU. Is it a bug in Sonar?

    I dont think so - more likely it's a driver/rescources issue.

You sure it's not your hard drive giving up or something? - what vsti are you trying? is it all vsti or only some? If you're using ASIO try WDM and vice versa.

Also are you using 64bit audio in sonar?

    Kind regards

    I use 32 bit SONAR, of course with ASIO. Should I try 64 bit (installing WinXP64)? I have AMD 64 3000+, 2Gb memo, EMU1212M, I think it shouldn't be a problem...
I tried a lot of VSTis and some of them eats the CPU when only 4-5 sounds played in the same time. Like eg. Rob Papen's Blue, Kontakt2, Absynth3, etc. But as I said it wouldn't bother me if it worked like in Live, that when it reaches the max. CPU, it's muted but then I could play further without loading the VSTI again.

no I mean the audio resolution - 64bit float - it's in audio settings.

Turn the audio engine back on using the button in the transport.

Yes, it seems obvious, but you do sometimes need to physically re-engage the audio engine after a dropout, if you are using live input monitoring (softsynths/amp sims).
There have been times when I could not figure out why a softsynth or amp sim would not play, until DOH!.........the audio engine is not engaged. [sm=rolleyes.gif]
