Same here wasn't fun :(
To me it wasn't a huge deal but the reams of spam made the place look like a dump and knocked more important/legit threads of the mainpage. I got a touch of the OCD yanno so it irked me enough to spend the time flagging things. Now that I've got other stuff on the go that certainly is time better spent scheming and writing. I'm cool with whatever is decided but the real reason I posted was so that you guys could see at least ONE regular appreciates how clean and organized things have become. It's a little more boring but I come here to read/talk about music stuff. I've got plenty of other sites to visit for the usual intertube angst and shenanigans. Cheers.

To be truely honest I don't think this is an issue that is coffee house specific (it's all forums) nor will a democracy resolve it or forum hosts if it is actually able to be resolved, rather a cakewalk tech. When it comes to spam there is no 100% solution rather a choice of evils. There are good reasons why the software was rolled out by cakewalk and it has worked brilliantly so far. Just my own opinion and not as a forum host. Cheers. (Typo corrected)

Many thanks for the explanations and for the other relevant and interesting comments. In view of what's been said, and now that the points I raised and the questions I asked have been addressed, please consider my previous objections and suggestions unwarranted, and I'm more than happy to withdraw them. Furthermore, I've removed the YouTube video from my signature to see if that helps matters. I'll follow current practice and will contact a host if any more of my contributions fall foul of the spam filters.

Thanks, buddy. I did check out the Asparapuss yesterday just so you know and enjoyed it. Now this is more a question for the Hosts I guess but also for you based on the answer... Does just linking to a youtube vid autoembed the vid these days or does the user still have to post the embed code? If the links don't auto embed, Steve you should totally post a link in your sig. If the forum software is now auto-embedding youtube links I'd to make a request to the hosts that someone check to see if there is a setting somewhere to prevent it. Although the embed function is kind of cool and convenient sometimes if it happens automatically against user wishes it can really slow load times down for no reason. I'd test it out but I don't want to make the page load slow after all my kvetching about it. lol And Steve... seriously, peace bro. I really wasn't trying to offend you or crawl up your butt.

I definitely recall deleting HUNDREDS of spam threads since I used to be up during the middle of the night all the time. I was myself, SpamKiller and SpamKiller2 (Ryan knew, I kept him in the loop). Since I'm now working almost "normal" hours, if the spam returns I won't be able to help much this time. One night alone I removed 128 threads which meant flagging each three times or 384 times in total. Sometimes people had flagged some, but two more were still needed and all three on the rest. I'd rather not return to that!
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Beep, the forum software won't automagically embed youtube links, it has to be done manually with the {tube} {/tube} pair. The issue you're having is that once embedded it will try to auto-load the clip, which is after all the whole point of embedding it in the first place.

Right on. I just thought the forum software might have been doing it because I've seen that behavior elsewhere (at least I think that was what was going on). And yeah... I know it's reaching out to youtube/ytimg for every embed (which causes the slow down). I could block it with NoScript (and ytimg which vids won't play without) but YT is one of the sites I keep on my whitelist because I'm always watching documentaries, listening to tunes, watching tutorials, etc. The embed thing is cool for the threads where people are posting tunage because it shows the title of the vid and a still but for general stuff (or in a regular poster's sig) it makes browsing the site kind of a pain. I don't know why I get such a bad lag from it though. I have a high speed connection and my laptop isn't a total hunk of junk (it's only a few years old with reasonable specs). Maybe I'm not used to extra crud loading anywmore because I only allow top tier domains (if that) in most places. If I use someone elses computer who don't have ad/script blockers I'm amazed at how slow intertube surfing is. I couldn't stand it. No bigs though. This thread is loading lickety split now.

I would typically wake up at 4 AM East Coast time in the US, and get into the forums and there would be as posted above - hundreds of spam posts - and I would jump in and help flag them all. This at one point was taking place literally each and every morning - and the folks in Europe got the worst of it, due to the 5-hour time difference. Twas QUITE the nightmare. I too would not like that situation back. I DO hope that the Cakewalk folks have some sort of mechanism/tweaks that can result in a reasonable balance that doesn't see too many spam posts, and doesn't also delete too many legitimate forum user posts. Lottery scams often spread some of the nastiest malware. I would be dissapointed if the software did NOT err on the side of filtering out. It amazes me at what people will get upset about. The youtube thing is even sadder. CoC violation or not, how rude is it to have a video load on every post? That a grown man needs to be told how jacked that is baffles me. I recall moderating a forum where a guy really could not see what was wrong with having a 80mb animated gif in his sig.
