Why don't Harrison just release a Mixbus plugin?

I've never really understood this. As I understand it, Mixbus is simply the Adour DAW with Harrison's DSP built into the busses. Is there any advantage in doing it this way rather than just using a hypothetical Mixbus plugin which would apply the same DSP but in the DAW you're already comfortable with?

It's not so much as a rant as curiosity. Actually I quite like the idea of finishing off a mix in another program, it's another level of motivation. On the other hand if Mixbus was just a plugin I wouldn't have to learn another DAW.

I believe that it has to do with summing. I could be wrong.

I really don't see MB3 as a DAW (for me) since I do not plan on using any VSTi plugs in it.

I see it as Harrison desk on my PC.

I usually finish off the mix in another DAW too. I LOVE SPlat, particularly as I am I MIDI guy, but I do finish the mastering in another DAW.

Hmm so I guess if Mixbus was a plugin then it would have to communicate audio from plugin to plugin to avoid the DAW's own internal summing?

I've wondered this as well. It would have a greater chance of being used by me if it was.

I've read somewhere they couldn't do it without LV2 format, which is not supported by mainstream DAWs. That's why they adapted Ardour.

The whole DAW costs less than most plugs. Buy it, try it. There is some voodoo under the hood to be sure.

It would have to be something like Sonimus Britson except with EQs, Comps, crosstalk and tape sims. You would have to put it on all tracks and buses, and it would have to have a flexible FX bin to change the chain order within the plugin itself. It would be one monster of a plugin.
Sonar's Pro-channel should be able to get very close to what I just described.
I just think it's fun to mix things up sometimes...and Harrison Mixbus does indeed sound great.

I just A/B a mix I did in both SONAR and Mixbus3.

Mixbus3 won hands down.

Is there a little snippet of something perchance that one could download to hear this difference first hand ? Doesn't have to be much, just has to be both the same thing of course, but just to be able to hear the difference first hand, like a pair of wav files or something one from Sonar one from Mixbus ?

I keep hearing about this 'sound', but then I read some horror stories, and then I wonder if it is in fact such a good nice sound, why isn't everyone using it, especially at the price they are asking. Then of course I read things like the latest thread on KVR about it, which isn't what I would call flattering, and well if I could actually hear it, it may push me past the fear :) But if not I'm still a happy camper.

It's a console emulation- compression, saturation, limiting, spatial enhancement all under the hood.
No magic beans.
You can do it with any daw using 3rd party plugins. MB makes it easier for those who don't know how or want to go to the trouble.
Great concept & sounds good too. I just wish it functioned better.

In what way?

Sans the lack of  control surface support (coming in 3.1) it's been pretty stable and I've not had any problems testing various plugs thus far (and have I got a slew of them).

Granted I'm only working with one project so far and it's a mix/master of a set of exports directly from SONAR so most of my EQ was already done.

MIDI implementation is a bit weird getting used to but honestly I do not expect to use MB3 for MIDI. The biggest boon for me is MB3 is now 64bit. I am making every effort to eliminate 32bit anything.

Re: Why don't Harrison just release a Mixbus plugin? 2015/11/29 12:38:33 (permalink)
I'm just learning Mixbus now. I still haven't decided on a workflow. Like do I arrange everything in Sonar and export all dry stems (including reverb returns etc) into Mixbus, and add effects there, or do I get the EQ and compression done in Sonar and export the processed stems into Mixbus just for summing and tape saturation etc? I guess there are many ways of doing it. What I don't see myself doing is a project start to finish in Mixbus.

I see it as send dry stems to MB3 from SONAR. Maybe EQ'd some and maybe with automation.

Then simply use MB3 as the console with the addition of plugs (MB3 or 3rd party).

Once in MB3, all tracking is "complete".

Re: Why don't Harrison just release a Mixbus plugin? 2015/11/29 15:30:27 (permalink)
I own it but I never bothered to re-install it when I upgraded the computer last year.

Most of my projects start to mix themselves as I am writing. If I were recording a band, and the project was somewhat more linear, maybe. But as it is, I always have elements of sound design active in the projets, busses, effects, even rudimentary EQ. I'll often have tons of tracks with just bits of audio, all split and routed to different places.

Just figuring out what needs to be exported how would be a waste of time.

That's not mentioning that I prefer and am much more comfortable with the automation in my DAW. At one point I toyed with the idea of routing out the audio from Logic to MixBus, but I'd rather focus on the mix than on technical stuff.

I'm almost exactly the same.  When I'm done recording, it is just usually final tweaking...then "select all > export".

It doesn't seem logical to make it a VST.   Also more hassle from the development end when it doesn't work in a DAW. We all had a plugin or two that wouldn't work in a specific DAW.

And although there is a VST standard, I'm seeing (on the MB3 forum) that not everyone conforms to or sometimes omits parts of the standard. IIRC Noel had to make SONAR code changes to make sure certain VST3 plugs would work in SONAR as they did not conform to the new standard.

That is fine, I just ended up letting the latest big Windows update through to all my machines including my 2 DAW PC's, I was a bit nervous about that, but now I don't know what I was worried about, so maybe I'll brave it in the not to distant future.
